I create very animated pictures and films. Having spent a lot of time making cartoons for children’s television (Ludwig, Pigeon Street, Vision On, Rosie and Jim, Tronji, Bonny Banana and Mo and DipDap), my visuals tend to be friendly, accessible and happy.
My preference for drawing over painting leads me to work with oil pastels, crayons or pencils on canvas or paper, but I also create digital drawings and paintings, working on an iPad using the ‘Brushes’ app, or in Photoshop.
My images have a rough, sketched look. I believe it makes them come alive.
My long involvement with animation accounts for a lot in my art. Good animation doesn’t mimic or recreate movement. It cheats wherever it can by simplifying or exaggerating or caricaturing. The further it gets from reality whilst still retaining the essence of what it represents, the more exciting. I like to apply the same principle to painting, playing with visual and narrative styles and ideas and juggling with the concepts of fact and fiction – reality and abstraction. Isn’t playfulness intrinsic to creativity?
Paradoxes and contradictions excite and inspire me. My main subjects are imaginary still lives, shot with a distinct lack of stillness and images of imagined sculptures and nudes. I attend life drawing sessions, but afterwards like to fictionalise and stylise from memory that which I drew from life.
I am also experimenting with art which contains Augmented Reality. When viewed with a android or iOS phone or tablet, many of my paintings, constructions and prints spring to life.
