Colour is one of the main driving forces in Sally’s work. Often using life studies or photography as a starting point, her work explores the bounds between abstraction and figuration. She works mainly with oils but also uses drawing, mixed media and printmaking in a wide variety of format and size. By distorting or deconstructing figurative images, changing colours and using the effects of the medium to develop the composition, she creates an interesting ambiguity in her paintings and prints.
Personal experience, cultural or historical subjects are often her inspiration. She is currently researching the east-west clash of cultures during World War II and how western women used their creativity in order to get through long years of internment in the Far East. This will be a parallel series to a previous project, ‘Relative Journeys: River Kwai Revisited’ which told the story of the Thai Burma railway.
Although born in Kuwait, Sally grew up in the UK and studied French at the Institut Français and at the Sorbonne, working both in London and Paris. She then studied for a degree in public art, specialising in painting and graduated from the University of Surrey, Roehampton with a 1st class BA (Hons) in 2002. Between 2004-6 she attended the London College of Communications where she studied graphic and experimental printmaking. Sally works from her studio in West London, participating regularly in exhibitions and undertaking commissions.
