Joao Trindade

Artists     Next Artist

Picture
Joao Trindade provides a vibrant and often meditative exploration into futuristic cityscapes, geometric shapes and contrasting colour. His painting updates cubism, constructivism and vorticism for the 21st century, probing technological innovation and interconnectedness, challenging viewers to re-evaluate the relationship between shapes and colours.

Many of his works meld geometric constructions with visions of the city that blur into abstraction. Crisp lines and sprawling forms of his cityscapes seek anonymity and universality, inviting viewers in his words to “discover a jungle of pleasures far from ideals of beauty, creed, nationality and social extraction.” Some of these imagined “landscapes” are in transit, with lines fighting each other in an apotheotic battle. They balance order and chaos, vibrating with colours and shapes that are at once rooted and vibrant.

Cubes are a constant presence, prompting viewers to explore the relationship between individual shapes and broader forms. They underscore the interrelation of life, people and objects in a technological age. These shapes are an element of the broader storywhich while often abstract seems to resonate with places both familiar and imagined. They build on the work of Portuguese modernists including Almada Negreiros, Nadir Afonso, Angelo de Sousa, Cargaleiro and Vieira da Silva. Trindade admires some of these artists on how they stood side-line and made stands against the system, motivating him to use art as a subversive medium.

The works inundate the viewer with information, allowing the individual to discover. Each acquires its own identity and leaves a very personal and unique impression.
