Raw Perspectives
3-8 December 2019
Private View: Tuesday 3 December 6:30 - 9pm
First Thursdays Performances: Thursday 5 December 6-9pm

Raw Perspectives challenges our perceptions of masculine identity today. The work in this exhibition challenge us to experience the male figure with all our senses. Art that we consume from advertising and pornography can produce a connection of tactile fresh eroticism, movement and intimacy. These images elicit powerful responses, yet can also offer a subtler experience. Sometimes it’s enough to quietly look, reflect and enjoy.

Art can stir feelings and memories, get under our skin and cut to the bone. We might find a work moving, whilst others might find some work disturbing, but they all share the same focus on masculinity, weather it’s from a male or female perspective. This inspired the context of this exhibition Raw Perspectives.

Raw Perspectives focuses on the themes of desire, passion, love, loneliness, isolation, loss, intimacy, connection, eroticism, longing, fear, adversity, conflict, community and empowerment.

Raw Perspectives reveal intriguing uncertainties highlighting the significance of narratives in contemporary art and focusses on socio-cultural and specific meanings around masculinity and the male figure. Some work reverses traditional sexual politics of the male nude, viewed by female artists. Other work explore the fluidity of drag and transgender body politics.

The exhibition presents work by 14 figurative artists working specifically around the male figure. Some work reverses traditional sexual politics of the male nude, viewed by female artists. Other work looks at the fluidity of drag and transgender body politics.

The realm of darkness, chaos and fear is part of our anthropological reality and the artist’s role sheds light on the complexity of human existential experiences.
Expressive obscurity and emotional terrains are common thread amongst the works included within this dynamic exhibition. The liberating capacity of uncertainty which originates from personal experience acts as a springboard to inspire creative dialogue between artists and subject. These uncertainties and improbabilities have the power to liberate the viewer’s imagination and engage more readily on an emotional and intellectual level. Through a visual narrative the 14 artists in this exhibition bring us on a journey through the nature of human existence and experience within a complex intriguing and fascinating reflection of what it is to be male.

Heallreaf 3
15-26 October 2019
Private View: Thursday 17 October 6-8pm

Tapestries are all about narrative, they have told stories since their heyday in the middle ages and this exhibition of contemporary work is no different although you will find no medieval maidens or unicorns here.

Each piece captures a moment in the story but that moment is fixed slowly by the artist as each layer of weft threads lay down the image of the moment. In this fast age full of technology and instant gratification it is encouraging that some artists are still willing to sit at a loom for weeks, months and even years on end to produce such remarkable works of art.

Some are small exquisite jewels such as 'First Impression' by Bridget Lane but then we move to the larger abstract work of artists like Angela Forte (Vermillion Sky) or Margaret Jones (The Fallen).  Spend time with them and they will reward you with their half hidden stories and their beauty.

Heallreaf is an old English word meaning a tapestry hung on a wall in a public place so the name was chosen to define these biannual exhibitions of hand woven tapestry. Heallreaf 3 includes 40 pieces of tapestry from artists across the world including the US, New Zealand, Israel and Europe. For some of these artists it is the first time they have exhibited in the UK.

More About the Artists

Time
8-13 October 2019
Private View: Thursday 10 October 6-9pm

Our experience of time can make minutes seem like days and days pass almost without trace. Subjective time, as distinct from the instrumental time of the clock, involves both perception and memory.

The French philosopher Henri Bergson coined the term “Duration” to capture this flux of time, it’s continuous state of changing and becoming.

Works of art have this capacity to engage with both memory and time in their production and reception. Some seem to have the capacity to slow down time while others demand an instant response. The current show exhibits a wide range of approaches to and engagement with the experience and concept of time.

Kou Shirai expresses this power, his feelings and spirituality through his binding works.

BASM
HEARTistic Exhibition
10-15 September 2019
Private View: Thursday 12 September 6-9pm

'' I think that art, like any other free way of expression, should always send a message or an emotion to the one who looks at it. Any musical instrument can make beautiful sounds, but accompanied by a voice & lyrics ... those sounds pass the barrier of the eardrum and advance into people's minds, the same goes for art.

This solo show will bring to the visitors over 30 original works, a variety of techniques & materials, including spray paint on canvas, acrylic on book pages & acrylic on banknotes, sculptures and also a tribute to three of the most famous and inspiring urban artists [ Keith Haring - Basquiat - Banksy ]. Roses That Grew From Concrete
@TboArt
19-25 August 2019
Private View: Tuesday 20 August 6-9pm

Inspired by his community and hip hop culture, portrait artist Terrence 'TboArt' Adegbenle aims to shine a light on the everyday people in his immediate surroundings. The people that he meets represent a personal biography and tell a story of his interactions with music and the arts, his relationships, his career and his life journey as a whole.

In this solo show, Adegbenle is attempting to reframe the visual representation of women with a series of large scale portraits that tell stories of strength, confidence, talent and pride, but also a certain vulnerability. The title of the exhibition #RosesThatGrewFromConcrete is inspired by the famous poetry book by US rapper Tupac Shakur. Adegbenle juxtaposes his traditionally created oil portraits with a combination of text excerpts from the poems and powerful words. These words serve as a reminder of the women's stories of overcoming the many hurdles that come with living in a city like London.

"I feel it is important to begin a conversation about the ways women are portrayed and in turn seen in art as a whole." (Adegbenle)

Addressing the Situation
A production by Mandy Webb
12-18 Aug 2019
Opening Night: Tuesday 13 August 6-9pm

This collection of work started in 2012 with the Red Ribbon Dress.
'The dress became my new canvas' 2014.

It is a collection of the autobiographical, i.e pieces, (dresses) that have been inspired from the beginning of my HIV Positive diagnosis, showing the vulnerability of the Hospital Gown to the later empowering 'Shield Maidens'. It is a journey from where I was in 2002 to where I am now and how I have used that experience.

It is a collection celebrating Women that have been great achievers, whether this was in the arts or in political struggles, women that didn't get the same recognition as their male counterparts. Women that through sheer fortitude have left us a wealth of creative masterpieces and information, even if we do sometimes have to dig deep for it. They are all part of 'Herstory' and continue to inspire the work that I do.

It is also a collection that raises issues such as the Luxury Tax, the money we pay for necessities i.e female sanitary products and I have made my own 'Luxury Collection' using said products. Also about the effects of Austerity and how many have died due to the cruel work capability assessments and sanctions within the benefits system.
It is about social injustice, or maybe it's about injustice all round!

The show was first seen in Bristol in 2015. Many more pieces have been added since then and it continues to evolve and grow.

Urban Angles
30 July - 11 August 2019
Private View: Thursday 1 August 6-9pm

Urban Angles – Exploring the ever-changing spirit of the city.

The artistic heritage of a city is created and shaped by the artists who live and work there. Urban Angles reveals the city as a hub which enables the cross-pollination of multiple ideas and cultures.

In the same way that the city provides each individual with the anonymity to be themselves, Urban Angles offers each artist within the collective, the opportunity to present and express their unique and individual perspective of the urban environment.

Images of structure, geometry, reflection, shadow, intrigue and transience provide the essence for the exhibition. As with other Espacio exhibitions, all the artists are actively involved with the gallery and many will be available each day for a friendly chat about their work.

We invite you to join us on a fascinating journey of discovery revealing the artists' unique experiences of the city as site, subject and inspiration for their work.

Scratch Below
16-21 July 2019
Private View: Thursday 18 July 6-9pm

A diverse and distinct group representing several styles and approaches to art and design, make this show innovative and contemporary. What gathers the group is having worked together within the realms of creative exploration for the year. Each with our own life and artistic experience, plus baggage and nonsense, to bring to the table. Traversing the traditional and with a calling card of eclecticism, (Whaaat-how did that get in there...) ultimately providing a platform of styles and mediums including illustration, painting, print, photography, sculpture, mixed media, installation and audio.

Incorporating the ephemeral, natural, unconventional and whimsical, it's a world of possibilities where conversation is encouraged. Aesthetically pleasing, emotionally intelligent, ambiguous, ambitious and downright suspicious, or at least descriptively 'dodgy', could be said of some work. And why not? What are we, if not best able to express through 'art'. Naturally it's up to you, the viewer as interpreter, to take from it what you will.

May I ask then? Are you sitting comfortably, or is something a little amiss? If so, please feel free to Scratch Below...

ANTSinLONDON
A Retrospective of over 900 Miniature Paintings
by Lorraine Loots
4-9 June 2019

Exclusive Preview: Tuesday 4 June 4-6pm. Serious Buyers Only, Buy Tickets Here
Opening night: Tuesday 4 June 6-9pm. Entrance is free.

For 6 days, Espacio Gallery will be transformed into a treasure trove of tiny artworks for lovers of the miniature form. The exhibition will comprise of the largest show ever hosted by renowned South African miniaturist Lorraine Loots, showcasing over 900 penny-sized watercolour paintings created over a timespan of 6 years.

Having exhibited in New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Chicago, Singapore and Sydney, this will be the artist’s first ever exhibition in the United Kingdom, as well as the first (and only) opportunity to finally look back on the Paintings for Ants story. The exhibition will act as a retrospective of the artist’s expansive collection of miniature paintings created between 2013 and 2019, as well as showcasing 20 of her most recent never-before-seen pieces, known as “The London Collection”.

Lorraine started her career as a miniaturist in 2013 with her first series, 365 Paintings for Ants. The concept was simple: she’d paint one miniature watercolour every day for an entire year. Initially it started as a side project, but in no time at all, the momentum behind the project grew and family, friends and - soon - strangers, began booking up dates and requesting their own paintings. The success of the endeavour was profound, catapulting it from a personal side-project to a full-time occupation.

Lorraine’s work has been featured on CNN, The Huffington Post, The Daily Mail, Colossal, Buzzfeed and Gizmodo among many others, and she currently has an Instagram following of 295000.

Despite her work’s global surge in popularity, Lorraine remains rooted to her home in Cape Town, where she lives with her husband, Mark, son Felix, and their dog, Salvador Dagi.

Fluid
7-12 May 2019
Private View: Tuesday 7 May 6 - 9pm
Live performances: Thursday 9 May from 7pm

Human IEU brings together eleven artists working in a variety of mediums in a group show - FLUID. The work they’ve created in response to this theme challenges, provokes and dynamically engages the viewer in a collection that incorporates drawing, painting, video, sculpture, photography and performance.

While to some the word FLUID may conjure up the gender fluidity emerging in today’s culture, to others FLUID suggests a method of working or a medium in which to work.

Remembering that the human body is 60% water, we’re asking the viewer to think about the importance of fluid to the human experience.

Stuart Howitt, Brother Kwan, Graeme Messer, Georg Meyer-Wiel,

Fluid Live
An evening of live art presented by Human IEU
Thursday 9 May 7-8pm

Artists Collective Human IEU invites you to witness short performances featuring:

RODENT is the ultra-ego of artist Benedict Stewardson; a trans-dimensional goblin and doyenne of the gutter, your very own fraülein Sally Bowles via chicken bone and a distortion pedal. Stewardson’s work uses drag, noise and text to explore ugly emotion and queer experiences of violence through high octane tragedy and destructivist ritual.

GRAEME MESSER will perform his cut-up stream of consciousness poems, created from autobiographical texts that appear in his earlier works.

Factual Enigma - Central LIP
23-28 April 2019
Private View: Thursday 25 April 6-9pm

Creating or consuming stories appears to be a basic human need and we devise all kinds of means by which to do so. It is therefore not surprising that both makers and viewers of photographs try to concoct or tease stories from them. Yet since stories depend on time lines, still images do not easily lend themselves to narration. It can be argued that they effectively sidestep or even thwart any such attempts on our part. The stories a photographer may wish to tell with a series of images will never quite tally with the ones the viewers might construct from them, even when there are titles to guide us. David Campany, who has spent years thinking and writing about photography, states: “Hitchcock was the master of suspense but photographs suspend in a very different way. They show but they don’t tell. They describe but they don’t explain. They are factual enigmas.”

See for yourself what stories are evoked for you and, if you can, come and compare them with those of the photographers, who will make themselves available on the afternoon of Saturday 27th April at Espacio Gallery.

Boundaries & Beyond
02-07 April 2019
Private View: Thursday 04 April 6-9pm

Some people love having rules, because they know what is expected, how they should behave, and what standards are in place.  Others hate rules because they feel trapped and confined by regulations. Some say that boundaries are crucial for all kinds of creativity while to others just the thought of it would send a shiver up their spine.

The artists have been invited to present artworks exploring an array of possibilities of being creative either within boundaries and/or beyond. The exhibition brings together an exciting range of artworks showcasing painting, printmaking, photography, installation, 3D and mixed media.

Either you're a rule maker, a rule taker, or a rule breaker, we would love you to come and share your thoughts and experiences with us.

Israeli Contemporary Artists Exhibition
11-23 March 2019
Opening Evening: Tue 12 March 6-9pm

Despite the abrupt changes and daily use of technology, which has become an integral part of our lives that we cannot do without, and despite its influence over our behavior, which has led to growing insensitivity towards ourselves and others, we can still find endless, diverse sensitivity in art. These art works deliver an inner and outward message: the human core is still alive and kicking. Each artist is unique in style and technique, and yet they all share the message that we are human beings who must learn to live together and arouse the dormant human within us – and for that cause, there is no better way than the culture of human creation, and no better tool than art, which embodies the spirit of creation and reminds us that we are all one big family.

As a man, and more importantly – as a human being, I believe art connects people and knits them more closely together to bring out the human artist within us, regardless of gender, race and faith.

Rami Azzam, curator and artistic director.

Urban Contemporaries
05-10 March 2019
Private View: Tuesday 05 March 6-9pm
First Thursdays Late Opening: Thursday 07 March 6-9pm

Fifteen figurative painters have collaborated to explore diverse approaches to the concept of the urban environment, responding to the contemporary urban world. Each artist is attempting to capture the visual character and essential forces of the city experience through depicting scenes of everyday life, the beauty of common place things or their interpretations of the symbolic, human, psychosexual drama of the city.

The Exhibition will offer glimpses into the very diverse visual experiences of fifteen painters, who chronicle their responses through combinations of careful observation, photographs, private archives, film and other media to record personal encounters with city existence and offer new stories and narratives. Some use drawings and paintings as visual accounts to convey the disappearance of social and cultural landmarks, others interact with symbolic elements to transmit feeling, atmosphere and humanity specific to cities, exploring feelings both of intimacy and detachment.

The Exhibition produced by these ‘Urban Contemporaries’ will offer new insight into the forgotten, overlooked, dirty underbelly of the urban experience and also its uplifting, chaotic energy and movement, emblematic of the urban encounter.

Earth Tones
19 February - 03 March 2019
Private View: Thursday 21 February 6-9pm

From the rich warm and wonderful colours of the earth a group of Espacio colourists and guest artists find inspiration.

Now in its 6th year the annual Espacio colour exhibition is always fascinating and always different. This year’s show, Earth Tones, is a multi-disciplinary exhibition comprising painting, printmaking, photography, mixed media and glass; abstract and figurative art. The link is colour.

What are Earth Tones? They are all around us and are often taken for granted. They are the colours of nature, from burnt sienna to yellow ochre, from Venetian red to vivianite blue.

For the last year, the Espacio artists have been exploring this range of colours and celebrating them. They have used the colours of the earth as a starting point and then stretched and pushed the brief so that it fits in with their own practice.

Earth Tones will not disappoint. Come and visit the exhibition, be inspired, meet the artists and join in the celebration of colour.

Roots & Rifts
22 January - 03 February 2019
Private View: Thursday 24 January 6-9pm

People grow in different ways, sometimes take directions that they never expected and experience new forms of living. Taking another path will bring new memories and could reinforce our roots, but can also produce rifts with the past. But rifts can also bring awareness and, upon reflection, enhance our original roots and make possible the understanding and acceptance of changes. Perhaps one should never get so attached to  their own roots. After all, a tree must one day reach beyond its roots as we must leave our baby shoes behind. It was this thought that gave rise to Roots and Rifts.

Bringing together a group of national and international  artists, the exhibition showcases works exploring a wide range of observations and experiences. These may include issues related to living abroad and identity, as well as memories and other impressions that each artist has absorbed on their journey through life.

You Can't Beat a Woman
8-19 January 2019
Private View: Monday 7 January 5-7pm

You Can’t Beat a Woman is a Heritage Lottery Fund project directed by June Freeman and Ravi Thiara.

For centuries domestic violence was both wide-spread and widely tolerated in the UK. With the resurgence of feminism in the late 1960s and the birth of anti-racism in the 1970s, however, a new awareness of domestic violence spread among young White British and British Asian and other ethnic minority women. Anger mounted over the misery and damage it caused to many women and a determination that something should be done about this grew.

The exhibition tells the story of how groups of White and Asian women began to campaign for houses to set up as refuges for women desperate to escape from violent husbands and partners. Securing a house was not enough, however. Women also had to learn how to set up viable businesses offering the services abused women needed. The exhibition outlines the way refuges developed as organisations run by women for women.
