Art often explores outer journeys in the landscapes of the so-called real world but for this show, the Artists look inside to encounter their inner selves at times of transition.

The interface between life experience and the artistic process can be a strange mysterious world of half glimpsed effects and ideas, but this is also the place in between life events where creative sparks are born.

Join us for a multi media show exploring the mysteries which emerge from a place in between.

Quantum: A journey through The Standard Model
7-24 November 2013

Preview: Thursday 7 November 6-9pm
A group of 11 artists grapple with the mind-bending ideas behind modern physics in this exhibition of painting, sculpture, printmaking, video projection and installation.

The Standard Model is sometimes regarded as a “theory of almost everything”. Each artist has interpreted this difficult subject in their own way, leading to an explosion of creativity.

The exhibition is a visual conversation between the participating artists about The Standard Model of Particle Physics through a diversity of disciplines. Using their works they raise a fundamental question posed by those who look in at this field from the outside. How do we connect with a subject, on a human level, that can at times be so alien and so far removed from common sense?

Within the exhibition itself delicate prints and drawings face expressionist pieces, figurative and kinetic sculptures set off character studies of physicists, Icons collide with Black Holes. To top it all, visitors are invited to have a go at a "particle collider" set up at the gallery.

A number of events will be taking place during the course of the exhibition to stimulate conversations between the public, the artists and scientists. We hope to see you there.
  • Artist-led tours on Saturday 9th November 2-5pm;
  • Lecture by Dr David Berman on Thursday 14th November 7:30pm.

The artists have been working on the project for over a year. Catch-up with their ideas and progress at quantumexhibition.co.uk and quantumexhibit.wordpress.com.

A catalogue will also be available to accompany the exhibition.

The Hours at Espacio Gallery
PRESS RELEASE

The Hours: Time and Process
12-17 September 2013

Preview: 12 September 6-9pm
Everything changes: nothing remains still (Heraclitus).

This is what happens when a diverse group of artists, working in a wide range of media immerse themselves in questions about time, process and consciousness. Some aspects of the show focus mainly on process and deal directly with the relationship between creation and destruction and the ways in which form emerges out of chaos and complexity.  A concern with the dynamic properties of materials is a major preoccupation for some of the artists and influences the way they respond to ideas about process, change and transformation. Repetition, serendipity and the sense that an artwork is generated from a process of action and reaction underpin much of the work on show.

Other aspects of the show focus mainly on time and memory, by, for example, the careful documentation of growth and decay, the use of visual diaries or the playful investigation of the spaces in-between. The Hours deals with moments in time as well as the passage of time.

Several artists explicitly engage with biology, geology, archaeology and history, exploring the relationship between the human and the non-human in relation to time and process. In these works the themes of evolution and the impact of human beings on the environment are never very far away.

Kaleidoscope brings together an international group of thirteen visual artists who are currently making their presence felt in the East London art scene.

Abstract and expressionist painters, portrait and figurative painters, printmakers, an installation artist and a sculptor make up this talented and distinctive mix of professional artists.

This exhibition is a showcase for revealing their individual and divergent concerns; it enables a dialogue between concepts, a display of informed 2D and 3D media and celebrates a diversity of colour and form.

Kaleidoscope is a fitting description. As the viewer moves through the exhibition engaging with a constantly changing sequence of themes, responses, colours and objects the true meaning of Kaleidoscope begins to emerge.

Deriving from the Greek ‘Kalos’ meaning beautiful, ‘Eidos’ meaning form and ‘Skpeos’ meaning to examine or look, you are warmly invited to step inside this unique exhibition and make your own observations of these beautiful forms.

From the earliest days of human art, the natural world has been a source of inspiration and fascination. When ancient humans painted on the walls of their caves they chose to depict the animals that surrounded them.

More recently artists such as Stubbs and Audubon have continued that love affair with their meticulous paintings of horses and birds. Following that tradition, Life Forms brings together a group of artists whose work reflects the infinite variety of life on earth.

Continuum at Espacio Gallery
PRESS RELEASE

Continuum
Caro Millington & Sarah Knight
18-23 July 2013

Preview: Thursday 18 July 6-9pm
This exhibition brings together the work of two artists, Sarah Knight and Caro Millington, in their investigation of the human psyche and its impact on the physical world around us.

The title of the exhibition – Continuum - refers to the development of each artist’s own work, and to the way in which both artists have created elements of work that explore the physical and psychological landscape we inhabit. The work is prompted by both macro and micro events: from the world economic downturn and its consequences to personal experience.

Although the direction of travel of each artist is unique, their work can be read as a sequence of ideas that question and challenge the human need to defy our own mortality and create lasting memorials to it.

The works develop from an exploration of physical impact on the land around us to an examination of the idea of property and how it is used to give meaning to life - as monuments to our aspirations - as well as how it affects perceptions of the world and our sometimes fragile place in it.  There are elements in this body of work that may seem completely disconnected, but taken as a whole it becomes a statement about the artists’ defiance in the face of human mortality. Perhaps our most effective monument to immortality is our art.

A Handful of Molecules and a Bucket of Water
13-18 June 2013

Preview: Thursday 13 June 6-9pm - performance by Jones Tensini at 8pm
An exhibition exploring human nature.

A human being is, in the empirical sense, mainly water, the remainder being a selection of diverse elements of the periodic table.

But what makes us who we are and what distinguishes us from other living organisms? One way of examining this is to consider the different and natural ways that we think, feel and act regardless of cultural context.

The artists have explored the diverse elements of human emotion and behaviour and have interpreted them using their own vision, understanding, feeling and experience.

Come and see the results of their exploration in a variety of media.

The Free Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers
Summer Exhibition 2013
8-21 May 2013

Preview: Thursday 9 May 6-9pm
This exciting exhibition features paper inspired works by artists from the long established international collective - The Free Painters and Sculptors.

The exhibition will be an excellent opportunity to view and purchase affordable works from up-and-coming and collected painters, sculptors and printmakers and to present the celebrated printmaker and painter Tom Hammick as our guest artist.

About the Free Painters and Sculptors

The Free Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers (formerly the Free Painters Group) has a unique place in British art. The group was established in 1952 and was originally associated with the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts).

The founding members featured many high profile and influential artists, including Roy Rasmussen, Lyall Watson and Maurice Jadot.

During the fifties and sixties, FPS played a significant part in the establishment of abstract art, being the first of a number of post war movements that freed artists from the orthodoxy of rigid and purely technical judgements.

The current FPS membership consists of an international collective of painters, sculptors and printmakers, who hold group exhibitions two times a year in some of London's most exciting commercial galleries.

eXposé – unveiling the truth.  Art can reveal and even create truth in their works according to philosophers such as Martin Heidegger.  Twelve contemporary artists invite you to enjoy their work at Espacio Gallery’s latest exhibition, eXposé.  Each artist brings their own unique interpretation of the worlds which inspire their art, from individuals caught in a moment of time in busy populated areas through to the interplay between water, light and reflection through to the built environment.  Revealing their responses to these inspirations through their artwork is akin to a moment of confession, affirmation and delight.  This opens up a discourse with you, the viewer.  Art is a conversation and we would love you to join us in the conversation by visiting this extraordinary and exciting exhibition.

eXposé portrays the fertile and diverse aspects of the artists’ collective experience.  As with other Espacio exhibitions, the artists are actively involved with the gallery and you can expect to find several invigilating at Emergence each day should you wish to discover more about the artwork.

Material World
25-30 April 2013

Preview: Thursday 25 April 6-9pm
Material World celebrates the physicality of art and illustrates what happens when we make art in an unstable, even magical place of change and transformation.

This show is as much about the process of making art as it is about the materials used to make it. It demonstrates that creative freedom can be found within rules and methodologies and that working with a single, unconventional material can produce unexpected results.  At the same time Material World also explores complexity and the consequences of bringing different materials into dialogue with one another.

Eleven artists have joined forces to create the paintings, photos, sculptures, assemblages, installations and prints that make up Material World. For all these artists engagement with materials forms a central part of artistic practice: materials and processes fire their imaginations and fuel their vision of what is possible.

A Room of One's Own - Women's Month History at Espacio Gallery
PRESS RELEASE

A Room of One's Own
Women's History Month
14-19 March 2013

Private View: Thursday 14 March 6-9pm
As part of Women’s History Month, a mixed-gender group of 12 artists offer their personal responses to the ideas presented in Virginia Woolf's feminist and modernist essay A Room of One's Own published in 1929. It takes its name from the author's belief that "a room of one's own and money in one's pocket" are essential to women's creative freedom.

Originally a lecture given to students at Girton College, Cambridge, A Room of One’s Own was expanded by Woolf for publication and includes her thoughts on education, marriage, money and property as she casts a critical and humorous eye over the history of women’s literature, ending in a passionate call to her readers to open their minds and throw themselves into creative endeavour.

Poetry Posse: Saturday 9 March 2-4pm
“Working intimately with colour is when I’m at my most alive. For me nothing can match the vitality I feel when I walk through nature as the seasons change. The hues and the sounds seem to penetrate my soul and conjure a creative magic that I never want to be without. In this show I want to take you on a journey into that world and to renew the fountain of your own creativity as we travel together in spirit around the gallery space.”

Renée Rilexie is a painter, film-maker and multi-media artist with special interests in meditation, the practice of silence and the power of art to promote personal transformation.

On Saturday 9 March 2-4pm Renee invites you to celebrate Women's History Month with a Poetry Posse.

Bring and share your favourite poems by women.

Mysteries of the Organism
7-12 March 2013

Gallery 2
Private Views: Thursday 7 March 6-9pm
                           Saturday 9 March 4-7pm
Ahmed Farooqui has created an immersive installation especially for the Espacio Gallery, where perspective is banished and the viewer is surrounded by a dark world of eerie, weightless entities that tremble on the edge of materiality. This is null-space, revealed by the stern gaze of science and recreated by the artist as space opera. There are characters and narratives here enough for many lifetimes.

Ahmed Farooqui is a sculptor and installation artist with an interest in turning the artistic gaze on scientific insights. "Mysteries of the Organism" brings together a number of new large scale installations and sculptures that mark the artist's journey of discovery into the biological sciences.
