B3: A PIECE OF FREEDOM

Artes gallery's exhibition debut.

Opening night: 9th December 2024
Exhibition runs until 18th December 2024

THE ARTIST

Esra is a London-based artist of Turkish and Cypriot descent. A graduate of the University of the Arts London (UAL), Esra began her creative journey at just four years old, picking up a paintbrush for the first time. Known for her acrylic-based paintings and digital designs, her work is an exploration of personal and collective identity. While she has completed several commission projects, B3: A Piece of Freedom marks her first major exhibition.

THE ART
In A Piece of Freedom, Esra addresses the complexities of protest and the idea of freedom. Protesting from a place of comfort, she reflects on the privilege of speaking out on behalf of others who may not have the freedom or the safety to do so. This series of paintings imagines a protest, not in the grand scope of revolution, but within a smaller, intimate corner—where the personal is political.
The works in the collection focus on the act of protesting for a freedom we often take for granted, asking: Are we truly free? Each figure in the series emerges from a monochrome backdrop, symbolizing the struggle of protest, with a burst of colour representing the cause they fight for. The words “I Am…” are embedded into each painting, representing the core belief that drives the individual in their march.
The questions that are at the heart of the collection are what is your prison? And, do we fight for the freedom of others, without realizing we are still imprisoned ourselves?
The final painting in the series brings together the fragmented figures in a larger snapshot, portraying the figure fights not only for others’ freedoms but also for their own unacknowledged battles.

Celebrating 20 Years of the Sybarites

SYBCON 2024 brings us together to celebrate the creativity and iconoclastic minds of two individuals: Desmond Lingard & Charles Fegen, also known as Carl Doghouse and Queen Charles.

Their ‘creatures’; the Sybarites, are a global phenomenon, created by the duo utilising their talents in haute couture, high fashion, photography, styling, and a “can do” attitude. Not to mention their love of fashion dolls!
These works form vast private collections around the world.

We are delighted to be joined by these collectors on this great anniversary.

This exhibition explores silences that can hold hidden emotions and aspects of ourselves that we keep concealed from others. The artist allows himself the space during his projects to visualise his own thoughts and feelings, then reorganises them in a visual way. The paintings capture a moment or a series of moments while exploring and combining a range of painting principles, both from observation and imagination.

“To be an artist, you look, you perceive, you recognise what is going through your mind. And it is not ideas. Everything you feel and everything you see, your whole life goes through your mind, you know. But you have to recognise it, go with it, and really feel it.”
– Agnes Martin

These paintings display an art-making process where unpredictable magic happens. The images have density, with a quickness and freshness of language, or 'visual poetry.'

“Using all the contemplative techniques I have learnt, I relax to make paintings with brushstrokes that are uninhibited and painted with natural ease. Meditation enables a freer way of painting, and the imagery produced captures some of the experience of meditation.”
– Rupert Record

Rupert Record's paintings are layered with organic shapes within abstracted figures and interiors, allowing the viewer to enter a world of sensuality and fantasy. He paints from narratives and metaphors drawn from his own memories and dreams, commenting on masculinity. In his recent work, he compares the late 20th-century LGBTQ+ community in London to a more open one in Ancient Greece during the 5th and 6th centuries BC, focusing on the same-sex love affair between Achilles and Patroclus.

“The complexity of what I wish to paint, including layered social histories, concrete realities of particular locations, and intense personal experiences, requires a lightness of touch and, at times, a surrender of control, to allow both known and unknown concerns to surface and animate the imagery.”

Since graduating from the Royal Academy, Rupert Record has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and the US. His work is held in many private, public, and corporate collections across Europe, the US, and Australia.

THE DOLLS HOUSE

Artists
Nicole Frobusch, Sam Miller, Sonya Hurtado

23–29 September 2024

Espacio Gallery
159 Bethnal Green Road
London E2 7DG

Private View:
Thursday, 26 September
6pm–9pm
The exhibition feature the work of 3 women of a certain age, reflecting on the  nature of Womanhood and the essence  of the Female.

When Nora slammed the door in the final moments of Ibsen’s proto-feminist play, ‘A Dollshouse’, she provoked a challenge as to the rightful environment and role becoming Woman. Dolls  have always served as objects into which projections are cast. Facsimiles and analogues of the Female, they hold both idealised and vilified aspects therein. Whether we find them comforting or disturbing, when gazing  at a doll we are confronted with our own disquieting opinions.

The representations in this show attempt to extend beyond prescribed superficial represantion. Even if at first sight conforming to them.

Varioisly the Female is both a distilled essence in abstract form, the acceptably portrayed expression of aculturated portraiture or the universal ‘stand-in’ for Woman, the doll itself.

Artists

Sonya Hurtado

Sonya Hurtado’s images are concieved of her own experiences. Using illustration and digital photography blended with Old Master sensibilities, pop culture and her own daily activities. Her work hints at other stories that lie beyond a seductively uncomplicated facade. The colour and vivacity of her presentation suggesting perhaps a darker hinterland, if one were to attach their glossy surface.
Picture
Picture

Nicole Frobusch

Nicole Frobusch’s delicately rendered numinous gouache abstract paintings mystically evoke and explore the Divine Feminine through Sacred Geometry and Natural Form. Alchemical, ritual process, is key to her work. Utilising ancient techniques and knowledge of pigments to harness the power of Earth’s rich palette.
Her small ceramic pieces possess archetypal anima qualities, at once Ancient and Modern. A potent conduit for the raw Feminine.
Picture

Sam Miller

Dolls serve as objects onto which projections are cast. They hold both the idealised and vilified contents of the viewers’ unconscious. Some find the doll comforting, others disturbing. They serve as facsimiles of prescribed and acceptable female characteristics or distorted ciphers for that we reject.

As ever, therefore the object confronts us with our own subjective opinions. Which all too often are consciously unpalatable. When we gaze at a doll, we observe ourselves looking back. So whether we find the analogue of ‘the doll’ depending on its age, beauty, attire and demeanour charming or disquieting. It is ours to consider and ultimately own.
When Nora slammed the door in the final moments of  Ibsen’s proto-feminist play, ‘A Dollshouse’, she invited and provoked a challenge as to the  rightful environment for a woman.

Since then the Dollshouse has become recognisable as both sanctuary and prison, depending on the conditions pertinent to the individual woman. Ultimately it is for her to choose where she belongs, unfettered by societal expectations or agreed Self-identification, myriad in complexities and permutations.

Thus Sam Miller’s work  shows dolls both ‘free-range’ and contained within Shadow-boxes. Which speaks to these particular choices, dependent on environment, culture, context and the conditions that define, shape and guide us.

The accoutrements of domesticity, motherhood and self-determination are familiar themes here. The impermanent unfolding of the female life is examined both under glass and beyond it. Including the  process  of aging with all its attendent aspects of darkness and introspection. From childhood innocence to the wisdom of becoming old and beyond.

‘She who defines herself cannot know who she truly is’.

LOOKING OUT / LOOKING IN
A selection of works from British actor and emerging artist Mark Jackson
20th - 25th August 2024
Opening Hours:
Tues – Sat 11am – 6pm | Sunday 11am – 4pm

@markjacksonarts
www.markjacksonarts.com

For Jackson’s first solo show he exhibits a collection of vibrant, dreamlike paintings that contemplate the power of the human gaze.
For Jackson’s first solo show he exhibits a collection of vibrant, dreamlike paintings that contemplate the power of the human gaze.
His years as an actor performing in front of theatre audiences and cameras have fostered a growing curiosity about this gaze, specifically the nature of its potential and its influence on where it rests. Who gets to look and why? What responsibility does that bring? Can the act of
looking change what’s being looked at?

Using acrylics on canvas and a mid-century - sometimes fluorescent - palette, Jackson invites the viewer into ethereal worlds that seem both to imprison and empower their inhabitants. The subject’s simple act of looking in or out becomes imbued with ambiguous intent. To attack, to
hide, to protect. We, as the audience with our own gaze, must decide if we choose to be complicit or not.

His paintings also encourage the viewer to wonder what’s going on in the head of the person standing next to them. How do they see the same work? What do they want from it? How does it align with their own wants and intentions?

Attempting to understand how we navigate the unknowable nature of the minds that surround us is central to Mark’s work.

with the following:

This exhibition is about vulnerability. Often we choose to hide our vulnerabilities, sometimes they are exposed for us against our will. We’re told that to be vulnerable is courageous and beneficial to our relationships with others, but we inherently feel that to be so is dangerous, a trap. How we present ourselves to the world is shaped by this inner tug of war.

With LOOKING OUT / LOOKING IN Jackson presents a series of works that explore those moments where we tussle with ourselves – to be better, brighter and open in the face of uncertainty, manipulation and judgement. Figures conceal themselves, brood and protect but they also revel in the joy of unexpected power and self-discovery. Vibrant colours and bold compositions seek to highlight the tension within the subjects as they ruminate, question and dare to express.

Periods of transition offer us rare opportunities to be vulnerable and define who we transition to. Jackson focuses on adolescence, the journey from man to boy, to encapsulate this. A time when we’re asked to reveal who we want to be and yet we’re closely scrutinised for it.

His two decades of being watched and scrutinised as an actor have placed him perfectly to explore this. Actors are required to be vulnerable, to draw on a child-like state of play whilst commanding a stage and weathering constant rejection. They’re subject to the powerful gaze of the audience and it’s that gaze we now find ourselves turning on to the subjects of Jackson’s paintings. We must decide if we use it to weaken or empower them in their moments of vulnerability.

Exhibition: FERNWEH by Luke
Espacio Gallery,
159 Bethnal Green Road, London, E2 7DG
5 - 11 August 2024 | 1 PM - 7 PM

The theme of this solo exhibition is "FERNWEH," a German word that encapsulates the longing to travel far away, to a place other than here.

In Tokyo, the sky feels narrow, hemmed in by the ever-present buildings. This is the sky of my city.
The nights in Tokyo are illuminated by countless neon lights, creating a bright, bustling atmosphere. Yet, when I retreat under my duvet, I am transported to a magnificent universe.

What makes Tokyo uniquely captivating? It's a noisy, dazzling place, yet it brings me a sense of calm. Amidst the crowds, I find countless things that attract and fascinate me. It's a city where everyone can discover their own personal favorites.

London, a city 9,600 kilometers away from Tokyo, offers a new perspective on my art. I am eager to learn how the people of London perceive my depictions of Tokyo. How does my everyday life and my world appear through your eyes?

Explore "Tokyo Night and the World as I Saw It" and share in the experience of FERNWEH.
We invite you to join us at Espacio Gallery from August 5th to 11th, 2024, from 1 PM to 7 PM, to immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Tokyo through the paintings of Luke

The variety of mediums and subject matter underscores the breadth of contemporary artistic practice and the innovative approaches taken by these creative minds.

In addition to the exhibition, artists in residence will be actively working within the gallery throughout the duration of the event. This immersive aspect provides visitors with a rare opportunity to observe the creative process firsthand. These resident artists will be available to engage with gallery visitors, answer questions, and share insights into their artistic journeys, offering a deeper understanding of their work and techniques.

Overall, the "Ascertain" exhibition is a celebration of artistic exploration and expression, bringing together a collection of artworks that not only showcase the skill and creativity of the artists but also invite viewers to engage with the art on a personal and thought-provoking level.

Convergence - An Art Exhibition
By The Solar Collective
20 May - 26 May 2024

The Solar Collective presents: Convergence, a new and exciting Art Exhibition. Join us as the Solar Collective returns to their spiritual home here at Espacio Gallery armed with a new body of work. This is an open-subject exhibition; rather than limiting artists, we are allowing them to make their own statements and bring their latest and greatest work to showcase. The only prerequisite is that they showcase any new or experimental work; this call has also given the artists a reason to complete those long-term projects that may have been sitting on the shelf. As always, any works from a member of the collective are straight from the heart. It's from artists who truly live the life! Come and support your local artists; you will be amazed! Oh, and let's not forget that they host some of the best private view parties in town! Visit a very special gallery and meet the artists any day of the week or during the private view, happening soon on 25/05/24 from 18:30 onwards!!!

Over The Hills & Back For More
A Ridiculous Collection Of Mercenary Rhymes
11-17 March 2024
Private View: Tuesday 12 March 5-9pm

This is a re-imagined version of the 2018 exhibition that accompanied a pack of playing cards designed and illustrated by Michael Coles. The original images have been re-interpreted in the graphic style of mid-20th century pulp/film noire, giving more prominence to the rhymes themselves.

A note from the original exhibition:
“I work with musicians a lot and they are constantly remixing and deconstructing their own music so I thought this would be a good approach to my own graphic work. I’ve always wanted to illustrate a set of playing cards and I started working on this, mixing and remixing my own imagery to produce 52 cards + 4 jokers. This wasn’t enough though, I wanted to make it more than a deck of cards, so I decided to produce a book of the images from the cards. But this still wasn’t enough, it needed words and I started playing around with nursery rhymes, with which I’ve had a long-time fascination. I borrowed, embellished and contaminated occasional
lines from traditional rhymes, but the majority are from my own unscrupulous imagination”

The exhibition is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated book featuring the original illustrations and the re-imagined versions featured in this exhibition.

1-3 March 2024

Join us at the “A Vision of Asia” Charity Fundraising Exhibition in collaboration with @fightforsightuk!

My name is Jean Bastien and a year ago I was diagnosed with Retinal Dystrophy, a genetic condition which will gradually render me blind.

Retinal Dystrophy affects almost 2 Millions people world-wide and with currently no cure or treatment available we need to fund research to finally find one!

Having only been diagnosed a year and a half ago I am still unsure of how long I will be able to see for and there will be so much for me to learn and adapt to. That's is why I have decided to help as many other people in this situation as possible on my journey!

Any little bit helps as we help people who are loosing their sight in any way we can and hopefully even curing us of this horrible condition!

AND THEREIN LIE THE GUTS...
13-18 February 2024
Private View: Thursday 15 February 6-9pm

A collection of perspectives by a dynamic collaboration of women artists.

A dynamic collaboration of women artists is poised to unveil new work in a thought-provoking exhibition entitled And therein lie the Guts…

The collective aim of the artists, who undertook their MA degrees together, is to create a space where the power and resilience of women are celebrated and showcased through a diverse array of artistic perspectives, challenging conventional norms and inviting viewers to delve into the depths of the artists' imagination.

And therein lie the Guts… is an exploration of themes that range from personal identity and societal expectations to the raw and unfiltered aspects of the human experience. This exhibition will feature an eclectic mix of media, including live performance, painting, sculpture, moving image and mixed media installations, reflecting the diverse collection of art practices within the group.

The title And therein lie the Guts… encapsulates the boldness and vulnerability that these artists bring to their practice, and a fearless exploration of what it means to be a woman in today's world.

Each artist brings her unique perspective to the table, unapologetically laying bare the guts not only of their art practice and processes but emotion and identity, to engage audiences in a dialogue about the underlying themes that permeate their work.

Another Side of Light
12-17 December 2023
Private View: Thursday 14 December 6-9pm

'Another Side of Light' showcases a variety of printmaking media, including screen print, lino cut, drypoint and photopolymer gravure by four printmakers: Rachael Ashley,  Zoltan Marfy, C.E. Johnson and Bob Johnstone.

Rachael Ashley
Using photographs of the places around where she lives or grew up, Rachael Ashley carefully layers up stylised elements to form the basis for her screen prints. Often in her landscapes, human interventions, such as stone walls on Pennine hillsides or pylons on the Thames Estuary, are contrasted with natural features such as trees and reeds; thereby emphasising the fragile balance between the man-made and the natural.
rachaelashley.co.uk
@rachaeleashley

Zoltan Marfy
Zoltan Marfy investigates the phenomena of emptiness. His primary interest is making images that evoke the cinematic language of Film Noir. He experiments with photographic and textural sources which he manipulates and produces through a physical process. The objective is to conceal and obscure the definition of the primary image. He then transfers the imagery toward a printmaking process which in turn generates an undulating and unpredictable result.
@zoltanmarfy

C E Johnson
Fascinated by the interactions of colour and a spatial artist intrigued by the power of negative spaces, C E Johnson’s interest in colour developed through study of traditional Japanese stencil dyeing. She combines various techniques such as linocut and drypoint by overlapping plates and colours to create the sensations of movement and depth giving two dimensional works on paper the appearance of dynamic three dimensional spaces.
@cejohnsonartist

Bob Johnstone
Focusing on the interplay between the natural and built environments in and around East London, Bob Johnstone manipulates photographic images, pushing parameters such as contrast and saturation to extremes until intriguing shapes begin to emerge. These other-worldly images form the basis for his screen prints which he develops via an iterative process.

Porous Light
Experimental, Alternative Process, Analogue Photography
25-29 October 2023
Private View: Thursday 26 October 6-9pm
Private View: Friday 20 October 6-9pm

‘Porous Light’ is a contemporary fine art photography exhibition which brings together 20 artists working across alternative process analogue photography.  The show, which has been curated by artist Wendy Hardie, will explore environmental and societal themes, often in experimental ways that push what photography’s boundaries are seen to be, how this field of photography can resonate within and between us, and how it can not only beguile us, but also empower, enlighten, and educate us.

The title has been chosen to reflect alt process photography’s aesthetic and technical ability to seep into and merge with different and diverse disciplines, penetrating deeply into subject matters in visceral, abstract, complexly layered ways.  In this exhibition it will harness not only aspects of historic and vintage photography, but also contemporary art, the sciences, history, craft, ecology, psychology, spirituality, anthropology, sociology, and mental and physical health.

There are strongly performative, durational and what are often described as alchemical aspects embedded in many of the art works being exhibited.  Artists choosing to work in these processes must often negotiate and accept the tension between control and chance and, to varying degrees, the co-creation of the work by the process, the site and / or the environmental context such as the weather or humidity.  Within the exhibition, which will include cyanotype, wet plate collodion, pinhole, chemigram, liquid emulsion and polaroid, there will be examples by artists carrying out important investigations into the exploration and dissemination of greener ways in which to create analogue photographic art.  A large number of the works shown will be available to purchase as original pieces or limited edition prints.

There will be a number of events across Saturday 28 October.

Kicking off, you can join artist Ky Lewis in a fun and fast 1 hour workshop, trying different pinhole cameras and developing the results in a pop-up darkroom.  There are two workshop time slots, 11-12pm or 12.15-1.15pm, to choose from.  Bookings for a fee can be made on Eventbrite via kylewis.co.uk or by link on her Instagram @kylewis1

Later on you can join Magda Kuca for a demonstration of an electrophotography Kirlian camera which captures the phenomenon of electrical coronal discharges to create ‘aura’ portraits, from 5-6pm.  To find out more and book a place for a fee go to kucamagda.com

Finally there are Artists Talks from 6.30-8.30pm, which are free, as part of the Finissage event from 6-9pm.

Moving around the two floors of the gallery, there will be Informal and brief talks from a number of the exhibiting artists on some of the ideas and processes behind their exhibited photographic art works.

Opening Hours:
Wednesday:  12-7pm
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 12-9pm
Sunday 11-4pm

There's Nothing to See Here
Solo Exhibition by Carl Dusu
26-30 July 2023
Private View: 25 July 2023 (by invitation only)

Espacio Gallery opens its doors to the public to host ‘There’s Nothing to See Here,’ the first solo exhibition by emerging artist Carl Dusu. The exhibition explores the essence of humanhood through an expedition of experiences and topics that affect our life journeys. The issues and subjects depicted transcend age, race, gender, ability, sexuality, beliefs, and all other parameters pertaining to our human existence that essentially make us who we are.

Curated by Alero Helena Opuama, the exhibition reflects Carl‘s interests in specific life chapters, such as loneliness, loss, race, equality, and identity, through his figurative and surreal paintings. Through the tactful playfulness of his work, Carl uses a combination of soft and bold colors to deliver and convey challenging themes based on his experiences and that of his muses. Through the purposive play of structure, striking compositions, an array of evocative colors, and decorative features symbolizing beauty, loneliness, and growth, the exhibition is intended to evoke conversation between the art and its viewer. With the hope of igniting thoughtful dialogues, this show challenges its viewers to make the uncomfortable comfortable through attenuative statements attached to a lack of particular life experiences and empathic connections by the masses. Therefore, ‘‘There’s Nothing to See Here’ aids its audience with an empathetic environment to make uncomfortable conversations comfortable and share.

Carl Dusu is a British-Ghanaian artist and multidisciplinary designer based in London. He graduated with Architecture BA(Hons) & Master of Architecture(MArch) in 2016 and 2019. His creative practice involves exploring varied themes primarily through painting, drawing, and collaging- both traditionally and digitally. Self-taught, Carl investigates topics on human nature and our human existence. He harnesses his power of storytelling - his own stories and that of others, known and unknown - through his medium/large scaled paintings.

Her Path
Opens: Monday 26 June 6-9pm Drinks Served
Continues from 27 June - 9 July
Daily 10am - 6pm

Her Path: Six multi-disciplinary artists' journey to creative success.

A group exhibition of six female artists: Simone Brewster - Kate Dolan -
Dawn Beckles - Nadia Attura - Anna Sudbina - Angelique Stephenson.

The exhibition serves as a reflection on each individual Artist's journey to their current practice. Journey can refer to an actual physical journey - travelling from one place to another, migration to a new climate or setting. However; journeys don't always have to involve physical travel. The term 'journey' is often used to describe the path we take in life: such as personal experiences that involve an element of self-discovery or the career choices made to catalyse their current practice.

All HER PATH artists have worked in other disciplines, architect, sculptor, jewellery designer, textile buyer, interior designer, journalist, advertising executive, and caregiver. All have spent some of their formative years working or travelling outside of the UK and most are now in a renaissance of their professional lives, either after a pause due to motherhood or migration to new climes. These past stories and identities are bought into the present and into the very fabric of the collections we present in HER PATH. This collective of artists are by their very nature, story tellers with diverse and inspirational routes to success. This unique never seen before group show is a celebration of the multifaceted talent of our most promising artists at Wills Art Warehouse.

The Royal Photographic Society
London Region Members’ 2023 Print Exhibition
Including images from Guest Exhibitors Fotoklub Split, Croatia
12-16 April 2023
OPEN VIEW:  Wednesday 12 April from 7-9pm

The Royal Photographic Society (The RPS) is an educational charity committed to bringing photography to everyone. Founded when photography was in its infancy, today we aim to be a world-leading photographic community. You can find out more about us on our website:  https://rps.org

Members are assigned to geographic regions based on their post code and we, London Region, are one of the larger regions.  One of the highlights of our year is our Annual Print Exhibition, which is an opportunity for members to share and showcase their work – so welcome to our London Region Members’ Print Exhibition (LRMPE) 2023.

This year we have a very extensive exhibition with nearly 100 images from 100 Members - plus 50 images from FotoKlub, Split, Croatia.

LONDON MEMBERS
The photographers attended and submitted four images to one of our three selection mornings held in November and early December 2022.  The people present in each selection day voted in two rounds to short-list two images from each photographer, then to choose a preferred (or "selected") image from each photographer.
Each photographer has an image in the exhibition and this has resulted in a wide range of genres, subjects and styles.  The photographers ranged from very experienced (including FRPS) to some who are just starting their photographic journey.  Some are exhibiting for the first time!

FOTOKLUB SPLIT
FotoKlub Split was founded in 1911 and in 2014 was recognized by the Croatian Ministry of Culture as a protected part of the nation's cultural heritage.  It has a permanent exhibition gallery on Split's main shopping street and we displayed part of our LRMPE 2022 exhibition there in September 2022.
Following our successful exhibition in Split last year, we have invited FotoKlub split to exhibit at our exhibition this year so we have 50 images from their members.

IN ADDITION TO
The Exhibition of photographs, we will be running Street Walks on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the Exhibition and these will be posted and bookable from 1st April.

The Hovered Keyframe
28 March - 1 April 2023
Private View: Wednesday 29 March 5-8pm

The "Instantialism" proposed by modern American philosophers Charles Hartshorne and William James asserts that the world is composed of individual instants (i.e. moments), each of which is an independent existence and they are continuously connected. Some philosophers describe the "frame" as one of the basic units of time and space, and as the essence of human experience and perception. Human perceptual experience is composed of a series of "frames" that divide time and space into discontinuous segments, breaking original continuity and flow.

This exhibition emphasizes a key frame "hovered" between time and space, past and future, and showcases x pieces of artwork recently created by six exhibiting artists: Baihui Lin, Jiuming Liu, Caishan Lv, Xinyi Wu, Bingyuan Yao, and Tianyun Yu. This exhibition is a summary of the phase of creation these seven artists experienced during their studies in London. By tracing personal memories, breaking the flow of time and space, capturing and reconstructing instants, they intertwine time, space, and the spiritual realm to achieve self-perception and construct their personal "scape". In Chinese philosophy, the word "scape" contains the meaning of "the spiritual realm reached by the perception of the mind," this definition has evolved over time and contains layers of meaning. For the artists showcased in this exhibition, their personal "scape" reflects their capture of key frames of personal emotions, memories, and the surrounding environment.

The exhibition is divided into two parts: "Key Frame 1: The Scape of Exploration of Personal" and "Key Frame 2:The Scape of Reshaping of Memories" In  "Key Frame 1: The Scape of Exploration of Personal",  artists Jiuming Liu, Baihui Lin Caishan Lv and explore the relationship between individuals and others through the retrieval and reconstruction of personal experiences."Key Frame 2:The Scape of Reshaping of Memories"  showcases the works of Bingyuan Yao, Xinyi Wu, and Tianyun Yu, in which the artists retrieve memories and create works rich in personal experiences and emotions intertwined with the present and future. In this exhibition, visitors are welcome to explore the personal "scapes" of these six artists.

ON THE EDGE
14-19 March 2023
Private View: Thursday 16 March 6-9pm

An Exhibition by members of the Royal Society of Sculptors.

After more than 75 years of the end of the Second World War, it may seem like we have taken the idea of stability for granted. Generations have enjoyed decades of economic growth, innovation and comfortable living conditions. Since the outbreak of the War in Ukraine last February, and with the energy crisis that has ensued, not to mention Climate Change that has been reshaping our landscapes for decades; this era of stability that we have all enjoyed feels more tenuous than ever. As sculptors, we create not only for aesthetic purposes, but in order to push boundaries, challenge the status quo and to inspire positive change in society. To this end, a group of artists formed by members of the Royal Society of Sculptors based in London, have gathered to make work in response to and in order to reflect upon what it means to have a sculptural practice in today’s times, in the context of war and climate change. At a time when the world is on the edge of uncertainty, how and why should we respond as artists?

The exhibition co-curated by Tere Chad, Caroline Russell and Emma Elliott takes a quote from the Ukrainian poet Boris Khersonsky, that has inspired debate and discussion between the exhibiting artists throughout almost a year of online meetings: ‘Every hut in our beloved country is on the edge. And to be honest, I’m on the edge too. I feel sorry for the ones at the centre, but really I’m especially sorry for the ones in the camp towers, watching the frosty distance…’

Integral to this exhibition are Ukranian artists Boris Krylov and Oles Sydoruk, and Iranian artist Farnoush Amini who will be making work that will be highlighting the ongoing conflicts in their home countries. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public events including an online lecture with the non-profit organisation Artists at Risk which provides refuge to artists fleeing from war, persecution or oppression. The exhibition is sponsored by Chilean wine company Arboleda.

Oles Sydoruk expresses his thoughts from Kiev: “Today's world has accelerated its way to the abyss. Humanity destroys all living things and thereby condemns humanity to self-destruction. The war in Ukraine is a vivid example of senseless, bloody, harsh aggression of a state that does not want to coexist with the civilised world, ignoring all norms of humanity and the norms of the world order. This is a vivid example of not wanting to develop oneself as a state, but trying to seize foreign territories using medieval methods in order to satisfy one's own imperial ambitions. In my opinion, our task as artists with our works is to convey this message to the world community and to contribute to stopping the bloody monster, which threatens the existence of the world with its actions.”

Anamnesis Unbroken (Au)
Works by Laura Noble
1 - 12 March 2023

Anamnesis Unbroken (Au) by Laura Noble harnesses memories and reminders of trauma, transformed into hypnotic artworks. Fusing still life and abstraction - using personal past and present narratives - she disempowers and fractures the most difficult subjects to turn negatives into positives.

Formally, on the surface, Noble's works appear to be traditional modernist abstractions, yet this is not the case. On closer inspection, they reveal themselves in layers to the viewer, like patterned puzzle boxes, giving a tantalising glimpse of the secrets contained within.

Noble’s work utilises an aesthetic that is suggestive of textile art. In drawing on the traditions of pattern making and still life to disguise the true purpose of these paintings, Noble challenges the notion of what is women's art. Textile art has long been made by women, yet so often interpreted derisively as 'decorative arts'.

Laura Noble is an artist, gallerist, curator, performer, educator, writer & feminist, whose work explores many facets of memory, cause & effect, specifically anamnesis.

Daily Encounters
17-21 January 2023
Private View: Thursday 19 January 6-9pm

Espacio Gallery presents Daily Encounters, a collaborative group show of five artists based in East London, exposing the nuances of everyday occurrences. Through moving images, photography, and sound, their perceptions of human behaviours are explored.

Together, the works question the physiological and emotional bonds one can form with the empty spaces that surround us. From the collective to the individual, the self and the other are explored as a territory of expressions and sensations, against the backdrop of digital statelessness. At first glance, what might seem as a series of common day-to-day scenes will unfold as a contemplative questioning of what often goes unnoticed. Daily Encounters seeks to highlight the unseen and the unheard of our contemporary surroundings. In sharing these intimate moments, the works embody our current longing for a shared understanding.
