Journeys
4-9 Dec 2018
Private View: Thursday 6 December 6-9pm

Journeys – Taking viewers into unexpected discovery paths

Journeys inspire the imagination from physical to spiritual experiences. It is the path to discovery, driven by a great sense of curiosity and the process of asking questions and searching for meaning which allow us to grow and blossom.

We all have our personal and collective experiences which we express through different channels. Journeys offers each artist within the collective, the opportunity to present and express their unique and individual perspective on various Journeys.

There will be wide interpretations of Journeys through Abstract to Figurative Art using a variety of media from watercolours, oils, inks, photography, mixed media and fused glass. As with other Espacio exhibitions, all the artists are actively involved with the gallery and many will be available each day for a friendly chat about their work.

We invite you to join us on these fascinating Journeys of discovery revealing the artists' unique paths and inspiration for their work.

Communing with the Ancients
Mark Lumley
27 November - 02 December 2018
Private View: Tuesday 27 November 6-9pm

Espacio Gallery are pleased to announce the first comprehensive UK exhibition of sculptures by Mark Lumley. Known for his unique body of furniture designed for Soane Britain, Lumley now presents an oeuvre of sculptures reclusively created over the past three decades.

Exhibiting an expansive body of previously unseen works, this show reveals the rigour, dedication and experimentation of a secretive and devotional practitioner. Focusing on the human form and in particular the head, Lumley’s work uses his expertise as a blacksmith to push the limitations of solid metal bar, using metal like clay, affording a fluidity and organic form which reveals the alchemy of his practice. Other pieces compile off cuts of metal which are shaped, welded and ground using similar processes to those employed for furniture making.

Lumley’s oeuvre extends to sconces, candelabra and outside architectural pieces, treading the boundary between the decorative, the purpose-led and the purely artistic object. Though initially resistant to creating figurative works, his process led practice naturally arrived at figuration as he allowed the metal to move and morph and reveal its form to him. Each piece is guided by the inherent diversity of the material and is neither planned nor controlled as if the artist is surrendering to his medium.

With visual references ranging from Michelangelo and Rodin to indigenous representations of gods from international ancient cultures, Lumley’s work appears to channel an archetypal relationship with deities, drawn from intuition and guided by the material. The process of secretively forming a world of timeless spiritual representations may be connected to the artists own experiences of wavering mortality and loss and a near death incident aged 27.

Lumley was raised a Catholic, educated in a Benedictine Monastery school and went on to study Medieval History and Archeology before becoming a furniture maker and artist. Searching for spirituality outside of Catholicism his work is distinctly non-religious but inevitably influenced by the aesthetic of iconography.

Mark Lumley’s work has been featured in The World of Interiors, The Telegraph, House & Gardens, Veranda and Architectural Digest. His exhibition ‘Communing With The Ancients’ presents a selection of 50 works exemplifying the diversity and rigour of his practice.

Nevertheless, She Persisted
Mhairi Bell-Moodie Photography
17-28 October 2018
Private View: Thursday 18 October 6-9pm
Gallery 2

The project was released online on March 8th 2018 to coincide with International Women's Day, was exhibited in Edinburgh in May 2018 and will now be showing in London.

The seeds of  this project began after the photographer photographed two vulnerable women in one week; one was going through chemotherapy and the other was being bullied.  Both commented on how the process of being photographed had given them a boost.  Shortly after this, the photographer attended the Women's Sister March in Edinburgh on January 21st 2017.  Standing amongst hundreds of women (and male allies), further drove her passion to create a new, meaningful body of work about women.  For women.  Over the following 12 months, the photographer worked with four charities and 25 women to create Nevertheless, She Persisted.  The title is a nod to the catchphrase attached to Senator Elizabeth Warren's defiance in the courtroom which was then adapted by the feminist movement.  The women vary in age from 13 to 59 and all but one currently live in Scotland.

The women involved have survived breast cancer, sexual abuse, domestic abuse, addiction, child loss, becoming a young widow, eating disorders, suicide attempts, discrimination for their appearance or sexuality – a whole host of traumatic events – but the one thing which unites them is their strength.  Despite having to face some of life's most difficult challenges, they are speaking up because they don't want anyone else to ever feel the pain they did.

Since exhibiting in Edinburgh, Bell-Moodie has been shortlisted for the Royal Photographic Society's 161st International Photography Exhibition, been selected for the Royal Scottish Academy's Open 2018 and been nominated for RPS's most recent campaign Hundred Heroines, which recognises women in photography.  The exhibition itself received hundred of visitors over the 10 day period and numerous positive comments across social media platforms, including a recommendation from Chelsea Clinton.  The artist has been interviewed on BBC Radio Scotland, for an STV online feature and for selected photography organisations.  Links to all interviews can be found online.

The full series can be viewed at:
www.mhairibellmoodie.com/nevertheless-she-persisted

Please contact the photographer directly to request additional information and high resolution images.
There will also be a collection of sanitary products for Bloody Good Period, a charity collecting items for refugees, asylum seekers and those who can not afford them, for the duration of the exhibition.

HUMAN
14-19 August 2018

Human - What makes us who we are and what distinguishes us from other living organisms? One way of examining this is to consider the different and natural ways that we think, feel and act regardless of cultural context.

The artists have explored the diverse elements of human identity,  consciousness, spirituality, physicality, emotion and behaviour and have interpreted them using their own vision, understanding, feeling and experience.

Come and see the results of their exploration in a variety of media.

Urban Angles
31 July - 12 August 2018
Private View: Thursday 2 August 6-9pm

Urban Angles – Exploring the ever-changing spirit of the city.

The artistic heritage of a city is created and shaped by the artists who live and work there. Urban Angles reveals the city as a hub which enables the cross-pollination of multiple ideas and cultures.

In the same way that the city provides each individual with the anonymity to be themselves, Urban Angles offers each artist within the collective, the opportunity to present and express their unique and individual perspective of the urban environment.

Images of structure, geometry, reflection, shadow, intrigue and transience provide the essence for the exhibition. As with other Espacio exhibitions, all the artists are actively involved with the gallery and many will be available each day for a friendly chat about their work.

We invite you to join us on a fascinating journey of discovery revealing the artists' unique experiences of the city as site, subject and inspiration for their work.

Frankenstein - Espacio Gallery

Frankenstein
5-17 June 2018
Private View: Thursday 7 June 6-9pm

FRANKENSTEIN at the Espacio Gallery celebrates the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. There are eleven artists featured in the show. A range of media, including painting, printmaking, interactive digital and 3D, are used to explore both the historical aspects of the book and its author, and also the contemporary relevance of the travails of Frankenstein’s creature.

Frankenstein’s creation becoming a monster provides a metaphor for many contemporary concerns. These include the effect of intolerance, persecution and loneliness on individuals which can occasionally result in the creation of modern day delinquents and criminals. Also of particular relevance to this show is  the current debate about the possible societal and political impacts of artificial intelligence and robotics.  Both these areas of concern have provided inspiration for a number of the works.

Unlimited
1-6 May 2018
Private View: Thursday 3 May 6-9pm

Unlimited (adj.):
1. boundless, unbounded, unconstrained, uncontained, unconfined,  transcending – ‘the  sky’s the limit’

Damn braces: Bless relaxes (William Blake)

2. endless, never-ending, everlasting, infinite, extensive, immeasurable

The sun-comprehending glass,
And beyond it, the deep blue air, that shows
Nothing, and is nowhere, and is endless. (Philip Larkin)

3. not a ‘limited edition’, i.e. original, unique

Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space [= its ‘aura’], its unique existence at the place where it happens to be. (Walter Benjamin)

The artists in this exhibition are getting together around ‘Unlimited’ as it offers scope for a wide range of interpretations, approaches, genres and styles.

#pengtings
27 March - 1 April 2018
Private View: Thursday 29 March 6-9pm

#pengtings is an exhibition by an international group of female artists interpreting the way they choose to present the world around them. This is often incorporated with the fantasy lives they invent for themselves.

Social media has given us all carte blanche to reinvent ourselves as super-human, exaggerating how we look and artificially enhancing what we believe are our best features.  The pressure surrounding body image is a real and growing issue and can occasionally manifest itself in anxiety and mental illness.  There are numerous ways to define beauty and catching a moment to appreciate it can be a way to alleviate the stresses of life and escape into a world of imagination . This can be achieved with art that pushes the boundaries of what is real and can imitate itself within painting, drawing, and sculpture.

In this exhibition seven female artists explore the internal and external conversation they have with their lives, and their views of themselves, both real and imaginary.  This exhibition is an inspiring portrayal of life through the eyes of contemporary artists.

JABBERWOCKY
and other nonsense in the here and now
13-18 March 2018
Private View: Thursday 15 March 6-9pm

This exhibition is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’, one of the greatest examples of nonsense literature. The poem’s impressive use of fictitious words and abstract imagery masterfully illustrates a scene of childhood fantasy, in which the monster lurking dangerously in the shadows is finally eliminated. While the narrative itself remains mysterious, the action of overcoming a great evil is undeniable. It is Carroll’s creative reframing of threat and danger through his bewilderingly-named creatures that has elevated the poem to such acclaim.

The show includes a myriad of contemporary messages about playing with fantasy in order to comprehend reality and to defeat menace. This encompasses two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks (painting, photography, print, mixed media, installation), as well as video/film and performance, all of which may be political, personal or as nonsensical as the poem itself. With the poem at focus, artists convey impressions of today’s Jabberwocky narrative both figuratively and in abstract forms, drawing from playful and serious perspectives.

Threads
Women's History Month
06-11 March 2018
Private View: Tuesday 6 March 6-9pm

Our lives as women contain many threads. Some run through time, connecting us to our past selves and pointing a way towards the future.

Others are the threads that weave us together with our family and friends. And there are also the threads of memory, of those we have loved from near and from far, and of those we have lost.

In Women’s History Month, the Threads exhibition reaches out beyond the boundaries of national borders, language, culture and belief, inviting participants to choose a thread from the wide tapestry of their lives and gently unravel it to release its meaning, wisdom and secrets.
