The Art Take Away
Outskirts Fundraiser Hosted by Sweet ‘Art
Monday 21 December 6:30 - 9pm

On the 21st of December Sweet ‘Art, a not for profit art organisation based in London dedicated to supporting artists and the arts, will be hosting a fundraising event, The Art Take Away, to raise funds for a new London-based charity called Outskirts. Founded by Sweet ‘Art director and Art Psychotherapist Corrina Eastwood, Outskirts primary focus will be providing inclusive support to women and those who feel marginalised by providing arts therapies, support groups and advice services.

To launch the charity and raise money for the much needed services Outskirts hopes to provide, at a time when vital services for the marginalised are being cut, we will be hosting an exciting art event where guests will be given the opportunity to view and purchase art by talented and established artists at very affordable prices. The Art Take Away will showcase hundreds of art works to suit all tastes, primarily small works on paper, which can be chosen over a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie and taken away on purchase. This will be art to go!

Contributing artists so far include Bobby Baker (who’s touring exhibition Diary Drawings premiered at the Wellcome Collection and who’s recent live show ‘Mad Gyms and Kitchens’ was commissioned as part of the 2012 cultural Olympiad) Felt artist Lucy Sparrow (of Corner Shop and Porn Shop fame) Illustrator Maya Wild (who includes Adidas, New York Magazine and The Rolling Stones as her clients) Mark Whithorn (Winner of the British Institution Award at the Royal Academy of Arts), Sue Burns (BP Portrait Award Finalist) and designer Shara Hayz (who includes Vogue and MTV as clients.)

At Sweet ‘Art we pride ourselves on hosting fun and approachable art events and The Art Take Away will reflect this along with Outskirts own ethos, by pricing works that are normally sold for thousands, at a minimum donation of £10, £20 or £30. Its gourmet art at McDonald’s prices at The Art Take Away!

For those who can not make the event night at Espacio Gallery, selected works will be available to purchase online for the weekend prior to The Art Take Away, going live on the 19th of December. A section of Sweet ‘Arts Sweet Shop, at www.wearesweetart.com, will be dedicated to Outskirts fundraising efforts.

So do join us on the 21st for a mince pie, glass of mulled wine and that lovely warm feeling that comes with supporting a very good cause while bagging a guilt free bargain!

DELTA
Dresden Academy of Fine Arts
14-20 December 2015

Private View: Monday 14 December 6-9pm
A class of German artists joins for DELTA, to bond and balance their developing
positions. All of these are shaped by their common ground, the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, an institution set amidst the historically and socially remarkable environment of the former Eastern German city of Dresden.

Although they cover a broad canon in nature and origin, they all belong to the same
generation of young artists that has inherited the task to redefine artistic expression through sincerity, in order to be believable. It is the task to choose a cause in the arbitrary and the attempt to carry seriousness lightly, where art is not competitive delusion but labour at the frontiers of sensual perception.

In his very own way and debate, each of these artists seeks refinement in articulating,
positioning and crafting his work, for it is refinement that reinterprets reality.

Oil painting, as the most immediate transformation of human memory and gesture, is
the predominant medium but gathers with graphical, conceptual and other visual approaches.

Do we need to say so? Yes, because then we ask, why? Drawing with Light, the great medium of witness, of record, an opening to understanding, yes but for what? Evidence? Expression? Activism? Celebration? Confession? The answers are both historic and personal. Twenty takes on what its worth might be. Consensus unlikely.

Edge of Ordinary 4
3-15 November 2015

Private View: Thursday 5 November 6-9pm
Edge of Ordinary 4, the moniker for this group of artists and a focal point for many contemporary art practices. A range of genres have been successfully brought together in critical curation under one roof.

All the art exhibited is recognized by its art kinds, of which there are many on display. Dominic McIver Lopes, in his recent book “Beyond Art”, talks about the concept of art kinds. He writes that any work of art belongs to an art kind, and which in turn enhances an overall understanding and appreciation of art.

In the forthcoming exhibition Edge of Ordinary 4, the artists will exhibit new work that pushes at the boundaries of their practices. Drawing on what lies beyond those ‘edges’ comes the inspiration for their new works of art.

These artists have come together to present a concoction of performance, sculpture, painting, installation, photography and ceramics.

FLESH
20-25 October 2015

Private View: Thursday 22 October 6-9pm
Flesh. Just the sound of the word is evocative and provocative. For some it conjures thoughts of a juicy steak, served rare, still slightly bloody. For others it brings images of Soho bookshops and red-light windows in Amsterdam. And for the spiritually-minded, there's the mystery of communion and of God made flesh in Jesus.

However you approach it, flesh is the bedrock of our very existence as human beings. Without flesh we could not experience the temptations and terrors of the world around us.

This stimulating exhibition celebrates the physicality and sensuality of the human body. The artists are invited to submit work which confronts the many meanings of flesh, and challenges socially-imposed taboos and notions of sin and virtue as well as exploring our preconceived notions of what it really means to be made of meat.

Confluence - Espacio Gallery

Confluence
13-18 October 2015

Private View: Thursday 15 October 6-9pm
As artists we are always mixing – materials, ideas, colours, disciplines, our various sources of inspiration. It is in the mixing that creativity happens – that we create something new. This is Confluence.

And it’s not just the art objects themselves that manifest this. Art requires and it produces a confluence – of people. Confluence has brought together fourteen different artists, but it also brings together all the many viewers who come to visit the work.

Whether you come out of curiosity, for inspiration’s sake, or because life just happened to bring you here, something is shared. And like two streams of water meeting and joining the larger river in a geographical confluence, in coming together, we, too, become greater than ourselves. In this melting pot of ideas, things and people, change can happen.

Blurring the Boundaries
Massimo Casagrande and Liz Wellstead
21-27 September 2015

Private View: Tuesday 22 September 6-9pm
Blurring of the Boundaries
is a collaboration between print designer Liz Wellstead and menswear designer Massimo Casagrande. Inspired by London street maps, the installation focuses on translating them into geometric shapes, patterns and gender neutrality within fashion.

The installation focuses on looking at simplifying the maps into geometric shapes that include pattern and line influenced from the evidence on the maps themselves. This was applied to the design process by using the London maps as an idea that the city is a design hub of emerging new ideologies and concepts. The collection focuses on the layering of fabrics and the blurring of print, embroidery and gender neutrality to create a new direction.

Place & Space - Espacio Gallery

Place & Space
15-20 September 2015

Private View: Thursday 17 September 6-9pm
The recent film about J.M.W.Turner has introduced more people to the breadth of expression that can be achieved in the exploration of landscape painting.

Place & Space, the new show at the Espacio Gallery carries that conversation forward by displaying a range of work by contemporary artists who make a statement about their place in the modern world with its ever expanding complex infrastructure.

‘Place’ represents the formal ideas of landscape in real or imagined locations. Our physical presence is somewhere that can be clearly defined.  It may be a place we reside, work or visit. In this age of GPS positioning, our ‘place’ can be digitised and our residences ‘post coded’ and Googled. Our minds however, can be in places where our body is not; in this way place can be exotic or transcendent.

‘Space’ may represent the miniscule detail or the enormity of the infinite. Work in this show presents concepts of distance and transcendence; the relationship of objects within a described space, land reflecting sky, transition of sea and shore, arrangement of buildings in man-made space, or simply the relationship between two or more objects on a table.

Place & Space explores a contemporary view of landscape evoking the world of abstraction through paintings, prints, and photographs. Cary Whitworth illustrates her exploration of ‘inner landscapes’ derived from memories of place and time.  Lee-Ann uses her photographs to explore the cartography of the human body and common elements found in the known environment to convey their own unique sense of landscape.

This exhibition aims to engage the visitor in a conversation about how we envisage landscape and our environment.

Form and Vision
1-13 September 2015

Private View: Thursday 3 September 6-9pm

This exhibition is a burst of visual energy which engages both the emotions and the intellect.

Artist/curator Terry Beard has invited a select group of artists to join her in revealing their core concerns. The result is an inventive and vigorous investigation into the human condition and the world we inhabit.

There is an astonishing breadth of subject matter on display here; identity and displacement, the way mind and body work in unison, how we connect within one another in the urban landscape, the shaping of the land over time, internal and geographic fault lines, the way that memories and dreams break into the presence of nature, invisible inner spaces and the symbolic and aesthetic value of insects are a few of the themes explored in this thought provoking and resonant exhibition.

Ceramics, painting and a variety of printmaking techniques feature in this two week show. Whatever your tastes and interests, there will be something here to catch your attention and activate your imagination.

Naked Boundaries - Espacio Gallery

Naked Boundaries
25-30 August 2015

Private View: Thursday 27 August 6-9pm
Naked Boundaries is an exhibition that will take the viewer on an erotic journey via art created by fourteen artists. The exhibition is directed at breaking the boundaries of perception through naked bodies positioned in provocative realities, disruptions of the self-containment of modesty.

Artists will break all social rules by taking the viewer’s gaze far beyond conventional limitations, shocking the senses through exposure to realities that most people don’t wish to see, thereby provoking mental participation in fantasies that are often hidden behind closed doors or in the furthest depths of our minds, only to be brought out after lights are out.

Voluptuously fleshy bodies connecting, crashing and banging together in sweet delightful lust, the aromatic flavours of the vagina and penis merging in the entwining of naked forms resonate through these works, invoking the unconscious universe underlying rationality.

The Uncanny in the embodied self manifests. Each artist is to use their own style and methods to create their own vision of Naked Boundaries.

MONO

► Download Press Release
Mono is a month-long black and white season at Espacio Gallery. In two consecutive exhibitions, Mono 1 and Mono 2, artists meet the challenge of making a purely monochrome statement, while being free to explore a variety of subjects, styles and media.

Black and white are polar extremes for the artist, and for all of us another way of saying Yes/No, Good/Bad, Hero/Villain. Similarly, white light contains all colours - black their absence - and it is this duality which gives us the magic of old photographs and cinema, as well as works by famous contemporary artists such as James Turell, Bill Culbert and Jenny Holzer.

Yet aside from these positive and negative aspects black and white also can suggest refinement, taste stripped back to the simple contrast between two elements. Without the emotional charge of colour the artist’s intent and expressive means are laid bare. Neither the artist nor viewer can take refuge – art in black and white carries a concise message and demands our immediate attention.

Reflections - Espacio Gallery

Reflections
16-21 June 2015

Private View: Thursday 18 June 6-9pm
To reflect means to show, or to bring something to light. But when an artist paints or photographs the world they see, they also bring their own ideas, inspirations and emotions into play.

This exhibition draws together seven contemporary artists who view the natural world and the body from fresh, engaging perspectives.

Christine Fourdraine’s powerful photographs reflect how she connects with striking landscapes - both natural and man-made - as well as contradictory images of women; while in her most recent series of drawings, Maria-Lena Hedberg has studied reflections from the sun and its impact on different materials. Depicting these reflections, within the limited media of pencil on paper and using everyday scenes, she attempts to create an understated dialogue with the viewer.

Ronald Hernandez’s paintings of nudes strive to capture intimate, personal moments, which reflect his own emotions as much as the personalities of his hero-like subjects; while Philip Leevers’s mixed-media paintings combine glimpses of woodland foliage with watery reflections and luminous organic forms to evoke the haunting power of the woods.

Marina Mos creates paintings that shimmer and glow with cosmic energy, drawing you into intriguing, mystic visions of people and nature; and finally, Nara Walker reflects on lust and fantasy with paintings that cast the viewer in the role of voyeur. Brush strokes become as sensual as touch, creating a raw connection between viewer, artwork and artist.

Artists in Wonderland
2-14 June 2015

Private View: Thursday 4 June 6-9pm
Artists in Wonderland commemorates the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Alice in Wonderland.

The exhibition reveals the artists’ distinctive interpretations of the classic children’s stories. From tiny details through to sweeping concepts, each artist brings you their own unique insight into the world of Lewis Carroll: here visitors can enjoy a range of exhibits from an interactive, mechanical sculpture, bespoke hats through to imaginative character portraits. Running for 12 days the exhibition includes tea parties and talks for visitors.

The Alice stories have inspired a wealth of artistic responses. The subjects and styles are wonderfully diverse. The artists’ reactions to the Alice theme have resulted in a unique, thoughtful and challenging body of work. The exhibition brings together a wealth of complementary artwork and opens up a dynamic and intimate dialogue with you, the viewer. Please join in by visiting Artists in Wonderland. As with other Espacio exhibitions, the artists are actively involved and you will be able to discuss the works with several present at the gallery each day.

Edge of Ordinary III
28 April - 17 May 2015

Private View: Thursday 7 May 6-10pm
At the fringes of language is the ordinary human life it supports. No need for queer entities produced ad hoc to allay our philosophical embarrassment.

Media need not be physical – as is the case with conceptual art. Yet, whilst conceptual art emerges from visual art, it has now come to fulfil its potential as an art kind in itself. But each art in itself has edges; and can learn from what lies just beyond those edges.

Artists are foragers. They notoriously borrow and steal. We are used to them borrowing from other artists in the same art kind, but less used to them stealing from the street or borrowing from non-artistic sources.

The work of the artists who contribute to this show, curated by Gail Olding, is diverse in its nature and calls upon different strands of connection to art kinds and to their non-art relatives. However, each is committed to the fineness of art and the combination of work in this ‘arcade’ is a celebration of that diversity.

The Portrait Show
14-19 April 2015

Private View: Thursday 16 April 6-9pm
A classic subject is given a contemporary twist as twelve established artists give their interpretation of the word ‘Portrait’. At times intimate and unexpected, the works capture the unplanned moment; a fleeting thought that changes the expression, the vulnerability of the sleeping figure, abstractions that hint at flesh and sensuallity.

Come inside and see where a single word can take you.

Layers of Identity - Espacio Gallery

Layers of Identity
6-12 April 2015

Private View: Thursday 9 April 6-9pm
This exhibition focuses on the subject of human identity and how the unique character of each individual can be expressed through the form of art.

The complexity of human emotions, our individual experiences, beliefs or even changing moods, can all influence the artwork whilst it is being conceived. These elements, amongst others, contribute to what’s considered our identity.

Three Polish artists - Bozena Czyz, Michal Cabaj and Lukas Kasprowicz - present their works at Espacio Gallery exploring how the artist engages with their individual piece of art depending on the emotional state at the time of work. Their attempt is to capture some of these intense moments.

In order to achieve this, the working process is often treated by the artists as a guide rather than a fully controlled approach, allowing the spontaneous decisions to take over the control. The highly diluted layers of paint applied one upon another in some of the works or quick and decisive brush strokes in others, create the sense of space and depth.

All three artists find the emotional element as a critical ingredient in creating a narrative and therefore making a successful artwork following the words of Mark Rothko: "I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.”

Y Not?
31 March - 5 April 2015

Private View: Thursday 2 April 6-9pm
An exhibition in aid of International Women's Day.

Y Not? explores the theme of femininity, feminine identity and women’s day with a focus on the female form, gender identity, feminist issues, social and political issues and constructs and personal accounts and perspectives. Works celebrate, critique, challenge, ridicule and reflect notions of femininity in our society and internationally, created by artists identifying as any gender.

Sweet'Art is a non-profit arts organisation based in London, dedicated to the promotion of upcoming and established artists through exciting pop up art events with a difference. Their launch event in 2012 was a celebration of women’s day and they are now going back to their roots in hosting Y Not?

This time Sweet ‘Art will be partnering with two amazing creative organisations: Lensationan and The LMP Gallery.

Lensational, who empower women emotionally and economically through providing photography training and equipment, will be curating an area of the exhibition, showcasing the stunning photography resulting from the workshops they have facilitated with women in developing countries.

The LMP Gallery is an energetic and creative hub in Austin, Texas. This amazing organisation are also hosting an International Women’s Day show in parallel to Sweet ‘Arts London based exhibition and the two spaces will be exchanging 5 artworks to exhibit during the show run, in a display of international solidarity and connectedness! An archive of this cultural exchange will also be exhibited at each show.

In addition to the thought provoking, well executed artworks guests attending the Y Not? private view evening can also enjoy welcome cocktails courtesy of Courvoisier along with the usual Sweet ‘Art freebies and surprises. Keep your eye out for those now infamous vagina cupcakes!

Y Not? will run in support of the Art’s Therapy project at Solace, a charity that supports those who are survivors of domestic violence.

Jola Wilk
Tangible Dynamics
23-29 March 2015
Gallery 1

Private View: Friday 27 March 7-9pm
Jola's works start from her passion for digital photography which she transfers and edits on her computer, a simple application that most people can do nowadays. She keeps on working on the image until it loses all formal elements that might identify the subject of the initial photograph. This is transformed into a large composition of colourful pixels on the screen which she keeps on editing patiently like a big colourful carpet where the weave is in digital format. After this whole procedure the selected composition is transferred on canvas, the most popular surface used by artists, it is transformed into a tangible object of art that can be handled by everyone unlike the digital surface from where it all started.

These works amalgamates Jola’s research as a student, carpet designer and her passion for digital photography that ends with an interesting form that we identify as Fine Art.

The Magma Group - Exhibition 2015
25 February - 1 March 2015
Gallery 2

Private View: Thursday 26 February 6-9pm
The Magma Group of artists will be exhibiting their sixth show at the Espacio Gallery near the East End of London’s Brick Lane. Francis Lamb says,’ The Magma Group embody the  contemporary mode of the pop-up..., surfing a wave of enthusiasm, camaraderie and enthusiasm that has seen them invited to show at the Griffin gallery, the Vibe Gallery and The Other Art Fair within the last couple of years.’’

The exhibition is a forum for exciting, individual and expressive British and international art. The group will exhibit paintings, drawings and video, ranging between the figurative and abstract. There will also be an evening of live artist performance and video screening.

The aims of the Magma Group are to form an alternative path for the current of conceptually expressive contemporary art. Paul Carey-Kent says, ‘ ... the explicitness of the programme behind The Magma Group ... to fuse expressive and conceptual qualities ... is particularly unusual.’

The Magma Group was founded in 2011 and is made up of artists from France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Russia and the UK, some of whom have shown at the Venice Biennale.

Colour and Materials
12-17 February 2015

Private View: Thursday 12 February 6-9pm
We live in a world that can be wonderful, challenging  and even alarming.  Art can reveal new insights and interpretations of the issues that can enchant and intrigue us as human beings.  Here at this exhibition you are invited to enjoy and to contemplate how our world is perceived and illuminated by the artists. These works rely on an interaction between colour and material to tell their story.

Colour and Materials celebrates the world that we inhabit with intimate and individual interpretations that the individual artists bring using a wide range of media.  Each artist brings you their own unique insight into this world inspired by factors ranging from tiny details of daily life through to the natural world. Their individual engagement with such a diverse range of sources results in a unique, thoughtful and challenging body of work.

From Christine Calow’s opulent hand pulled silkscreen prints and paper collages exploring her personal response to her travels to Lee Herring’s richly textured and multi-layered memory based landscapes, from Terry Beard’s  printed and painted textile hangings to Natalie Sirett’s  combination of egg tempera, acrylic and inks  that depict patterns and repetitions in history Colour and Materials portrays the fertile and diverse aspects of the artists’ collective experience.

Colour and Materials reveals a wealth of artwork ranging from abstracted stories of scents, sounds and colours found across the globe through to poetic narratives of deconstructed forms. The exhibition is akin to a moment of confession, affirmation and delight.  These artists open up an energetic yet intimate dialogue with you, the viewer.  Art is a conversation and we would love you to join in the conversation by visiting this extraordinary exhibition.

This is a colourful and imaginative exhibition that encourages the viewer to discover and explore the creations of contemporary artists. As with other Espacio exhibitions, the artists are actively involved with the gallery and you can expect to find several invigilating at Colour and Materials each day should you wish to find out more about the artwork.

Across Boundaries
5-10 February 2015

Private View: Thursday 5 February 6-9pm
Performance at Private View: Borderline by Limor Collins 8pm

Boundaries can be represented as an invisible circle  around us, which is  necessary to provide a safe and comfortable containment.  Unfortunately, they can also promote repression and pain,  if used  as institutionalised elements that divide cultures, classes and races. In that sense they  produce  prejudices, and even interfere in our mental beliefs, and , as a consequence, they close out freedom.

But how should boundaries be defined and applied within art and creativity? To start our investigation we decided to work playfully  proposing 'Across Boundaries' ,  a free-themed contemporary exhibition representing the works of a broad-ranging worldwide group, which includes both emerging and established artists.

The range of works goes from the representational to the abstract and conceptual, in categories that include painting, sculpture, drawing , photography, mix media, installation, film/video and performance. By not being given a theme to follow, the artists are encouraged to feel totally independent through their engagement  in the creative process, and free to explore any methods and subjects as they wish.

Will the outcome of this show  disclose any resonance, a congregation of views, dissonances?... Whatever the result, creating across boundaries can promise a vibrant and exciting environment; but all may be revealed in the viewers' perceptions.

The Anti Gallery Gallery Show
8-29 January 2015

Opening event: Thursday 8 January 6-9pm
35 artists and art groups are staging a takeover of the Espacio Gallery in January 2015 to turn it into a demonstration site, an encounter space and an ideas laboratory.

Instigated by the
Degrees of Freedom artist collective, the Anti Gallery Gallery Show is an experiment in finding ways for artists to change their relationship with each other, their artworks and the public within a traditional gallery space so as to subvert its governing ethos- competitive individualism within a consumerist culture.

The Show is designed as a festival rather than a normal exhibition and aims to create an ever changing, boisterous and engaging experience inside and outside the gallery space. The ambition is to engage artists and visitors, make them think, play and take part in ways that are thought provoking as well as fun.

The takeover is supported by Carlos de Lins, Director of the Espacio Gallery. ”The Anti Gallery Gallery Show makes some very serious points about the nature of the art world and having them made in a gallery space adds an interesting dimension to what they are saying”.

The Show features installations, performances, constructed situations, encounters and happenings that challenge the values, rituals, practices and conventions of the gallery culture. All artworks will be created or completed at the gallery or require participation from visitors.

Participating artists include Ahmed Farooqui, Andrea Artz, Bodo Jackson Artist Collaboration, Chloë Louise Lawrence, Claire Nelmes, Cluster Bomb Collective, Consuelo Celluzzi, Dan Kennedy, Diana Scarborough, Ellen Jewell, Elspeth Penfold, Esperanza Gomez-Carrera, Fans of Feminism, Graham Asker, Graham Johnston, Hysterical Women Collective, Jane Smith, Jeanette Abi Khalil, John O’Hare, Jones Tensini, Kate Walters, Klaus Pinter, Liana Bortolozzo, Livia Garcia, Marta Daeuble, Matthew Kay, Miguel Ivorra, Monika Tobel, Naomi Oduse, Natasha Sabatini, Naya Eleftheriou, S R Jimmy, Stephanie Conway and the Women’s Tap Rhythm Collective.

Information on the daily schedule of events will be available here from 2nd January 2015.

Opening hours: Tues & Wed 3pm-8pm, Thurs-Sat 1pm-8pm, Sunday 11am-6pm, Monday closed.

Instigated and facilitated by the
