Naughty and Nice
19-23 December

Private View: Tuesday 19 December 6-9pm

Sweet ‘Art are delighted to invite you to Naughty and Nice, an exciting, fun and thought provoking art event, with work by over 50 artists. Running from the 19 -23 December the exhibition will explore the festive season in both traditional and alternative ways.

Before entering the gallery, enjoy an alternative take on the Christmas window created by artist and puppeteer Garry Rutter. Then go on a curated journey exploring the season and festivities with snowy landscapes by artists such as Bhavisha Patel; tongue-in-cheek looks at consumerism, excess and gluttony by artists including Gia Strauss and Michael Croft; fun, festive and celebratory pieces by artists including Chris Avis and Maria Varniva; and non-christian explorations of the Christmas season by artists such as Bahar Borna Faraz.

The exhibition opening party takes place on the 19 December from 6pm and will follow in
Sweet ‘Art tradition of being a fun and inclusive night fueled with festive drinks, refreshments and freebies.

Visitors arriving early may be lucky enough to bag one of our limited numbers of crackers to discover if Krampus believes you have been naughty or nice. Then if you dare, enter Krampus’ lair to choose either a naughty or nice treat, without waking the beast. Warning! Naughty treats may not be for the faint hearted, as we all know what folklore’s anti-Santa gets up to at this time of year!

Recent Paintings
Elizabeth Meadows and Helen Douglas-Cooper
21-26 November 2017

Private view: Thursday 23 November 6–9pm

A show of non-figurative paintings by two artists who explore the possibilities of pictorial space, colour and mark-making.

Elizabeth Meadows' work focuses on the relationship between one space and the next. Each painting may resonate a particular sound, with the depth and luminosity of colour dictating its sharp or muffled tone.  "At a certain stage the mark, the line, the bar takes on an identity of its own. It may be simply that it feels right."

Helen Douglas-Cooper's paintings are explorations of the language of space-making. They are inspired by light and colour, memories, places, and by the qualities of paint itself. An underlying geometry, experimentation with process, and the materiality of the paint surface are recurring themes; colour is an animating force.

The Beauty and Soul of Japanese Creation

Crossing the Frontiers of Tradition and Innovation - The Beauty and Soul of Japanese Creation

Japan-based Radiant Star Art agency LLC will host The Beauty and Soul of Japanese Creation at two venues in London starting on October 16, 2017. Sixteen Japanese artists and artisans will exhibit various works including traditional arts and crafts, modern art works, as well as subculture works which characterize modern-day Japan.

While today’s Japanese creation incorporates tradition, it also includes a new wave of creators who have reinterpreted the tradition by reflecting the changes of time in their works.

Many of the artworks presented at the exhibition differ from the Japanese sceneries, animals, and plants typically associated with Japanese creation, but they still convey and include the traditional sensibility and elaborate techniques that are unique to Japanese artists and artisans.

Sensitivity, Shosa* or grace, and a deep sense of aesthetics - all this profoundness and technique applied by Japanese creators will be exhibited for those who love art in London.

In addition, we hope that this exhibition will provide people with opportunities to better understand the Japanese culture in general - by experiencing the ever-evolving Japanese creative scene.

*Shosa is the description of the movement of the body concentrating on the movement
itself, for specific activities. Often related to the movements of traditional Japanese Art,
for example Tea Ceremonies.

edge of ordinary 6
3-15 October 2017

Private View: Thursday 5 October 6-10pm

EO6 asks serious questions about artists contemporary practice and their place within art history’s foundations by dealing in the tropes of Photography, Abstract and Urban Expressionism, Surrealism, Modernist regard for material, with a Postmodern ease in mixing references.

The artists work to establish a distance between themselves and their work to create the void which allows them to reflect on and then push at the boundaries , the edges of their practises, and into this same space the viewer is invited to find their own perspective on the exhibited work.

Eight artists present to you an exciting range of work that inspires the conversation about the current and the exhibition is in media that ranges from Sculpture, Installation through Painting, Printmaking and Photography.

Solo Exhibition by Lisa Kreuziger
26 September - 1 October 2017

Private View: Thursday 28 September 6-9pm

from the edge of mind is an exhibition featuring new paintings and installations by Lisa Kreuziger.

The artist seeks to capture varied mental states as well as whimsical moods. While she explores a range of emotion, thought and perception, her work has a profoundly humorous side.

Subtle and not as easily deconstructed as a joke, her humor is all part of her approach to emotionally-charged issues of the human condition. The centerpiece of the show is her latest series INSOMNIACS. The mainly large-format paintings depict a stressful side of nightlife, albeit in a waggish and affectionate way.

The exhibition also includes ORANGE 200, a participatory installation, and MIND GAMES, a sculptural combine. Both works deal with idiosyncrasies of the artistic mind.

Degrees of Freedom

The Republic of Brexitopia
6-16 September 2017

Private View: Thursday 7 September 6-9pm

The Republic of Brexitopia is an imaginary country of the near future.  An exhibition at the Espacio Gallery invites an international group of artists to explore the forms that such a country might take and the forces that might shape it.

Using a mix of participative, performative and provocative strategies the 27 participating artists address not just Brexitopia’s political and economic trajectory, but also the relationship between its citizens, the lure of exceptionalism, and the narrow line between optimism and delusion, utopia and dystopia.

The tone of the artworks varies from the passionate to cool observation, from the committed to wry humour.  Some responses are based on personal experience of the artists – a shaken sense of belonging and the feeling of being turned into “the other”.  Other responses test the boundaries of patriotism, truth and historical remembrance.

The participative nature of many of the works invites the visitor to reflect on the idea of human agency. They suggest that we don’t have to resign ourselves to the inevitability of this or that future, but that we can choose to be active agents in shaping the future we desire.

Private View: Tuesday 25 July 6-9pm

Eleven artists who have worked alongside each other for the past year will show new work for one week only at Espacio Gallery.

The theme ‘10 + 1’ has been chosen because sadly one of the artists, Emma Hope, passed away on March 9, 2017.  The group is happy to announce that Emma’s work will be included in the exhibition.

The exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to explore the most recent works of these 11 very different artists. Their work ranges from drawing, painting, printmaking,  photography and video to stitch and fabric work, sculpture and installations.

This show displays their most recent accomplishments – works they are passionate about. The show gives the viewer an insight into themes important in the artists’ lives right now. Hive Mind - Renee Rilexie
Solo Exhibition
01-11 June 2017
Gallery 2

Private View: Thursday 1 June 6-9pm

In a world where social media and smartphones promise to bring us all closer together, it seems the reality is that we’re drifting apart. Our carefully constructed public images can sometimes serve to alienate those we want to feel closer to and we even risk losing ourselves in these reflected realities.

This solo show from Renee Rilexie dives deep under the surface of our hyper-connected lives to explore what really unites us, what divides us, and what we can do to forge more nourishing human bonds in the age of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

A series of mannequin heads is transformed by the insertion of thousands of metal pins and the application of mobile SIM cards, inviting us to question where humanity begins and technology ends. Are we now defined by the Subscriber Identity Modules of our phones and tablets? Or are we still in control?

And what has happened to our bodies? Is life now only lived in our heads? Or is there still a place for connecting in the flesh, rather than through screens?

Switch off your devices and join us to discover whether the hive mind we’ve created is a dream come true or a nightmare in progress.

Lost & Found
2-14 May 2017

Private View: Thursday 4 May 6-9pm

The ‘Lost and Found’ exhibition, showing for two weeks at Espacio Gallery, fills the two floors of the large, bright space with impressive historical sculpture, colourful painting, beautiful printmaking, skilful drawing, poetic installations, interactive games and augmented reality.

Lost and Found - the first thing you think of is Lost and Found Property. But take a moment and you’ll quickly see how often the idea of losing and finding is a part of our everyday experience. You can lose - your mind, your temper and your keys. You can find - inner peace, the strength to go on and your keys. At first glance lost is usually negative while found is generally positive. But most of us relish it when we lose ourselves in the moment and you can find a worm in your apple.

Ten artists have explored the ideas of ‘Lost’ and ‘Found’ over the last year through painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and interactive installations. The artists are: Graham Asker, Julie Caves, Esperanza Gomez-Carrera, Nick Hazzard, Martin Howard, Ruth Kathryn Jones, Peter Lang, Chris Mercier, Matt Smith, and Liz Whiteman Smith. Most of the artists have shown together before in the highly acclaimed exhibitions ‘Artists in Wonderland’ and ‘Quantum: A Journey Through the Standard Model”, both at Espacio Gallery. Though structured around a universal concept, each of the artists has approached the idea from a very different perspective and this broad range of responses has resulted in a thought-provoking, engaging exhibition.

The organizer, Liz Whiteman Smith, feels that the strength of the exhibition lies in the fact that the group of artists meets once a month to discuss their ideas and support each other to create work that is well developed and professionally executed. She says “Visitors will find a wide range of mediums from painting to 3D printing, a pin ball machine to installations. Our artists are moving forward and embracing new technology in their artwork."

Infinite Possibility
17-23 April 2017

Private View: Thursday 20 April 6-9pm
The exhibition is organized by the students from University of the Arts London, exploring different genres of art. In here, various art forms get combined and will give viewers a unique art experience.

Have people ever thought about any possibility which may happen in our life? Everything is possible, everything could exist in our life. If there is a chance that allows you to go back to the past, are you willing to choose another way to live? If you follow the way in which you are guided by your feeling without any restrictions, your life will be full of possibilities again.

These participants explore different aspect around every possibility they found in their life. They want to express this theme to everyone who sees their works, make them think profoundly and imagine whether they could have different kinds of lives. When they reflect their feelings on the art works, viewers can have intensive feeling and a kind of strong power which stands for infinity from the works.

Between the Lines
11-16 April 2017

Private View: Thursday 13 April 6-9pm
Between the Lines focuses on women and femininity, as perceived and understood through various points of observation. Some of the artworks reflect an objective and critical analysis of ‘the second sex’ in the actual world, while others demonstrate a totally subjective approach. Symbolism, abstraction, personal views, and any thoughts and feelings brought about during the art-making process are just some of the features that can be observed.

All in all, this exhibition is a fascinating showcase inspired by the result of a free and audacious contemplation of women.

Hidden Layers - Espacio Gallery

Hidden Layers
28 March - 2 April 2017

Private View: Thursday 30 March 6-9pm
Hidden Layers showcases artworks by four individual artists. While each artist explores his/her own unique personality, some commonalities of interest may be discerned. How many layers are hidden in each finished piece? How do we describe those layers? What are the differing variables between each artist’s work? What are their commonalities? Do we all express ourselves, our thoughts and emotions, through the objects that we create?

Each painting, sculpture, collage or print is an expression of the artist’s own journey through a creation process which manifests through the application of layers of paint, marks, variety of textures, shapes or forms, into a work of art.

Four different artists - four unique expressions of an individual's state of mind, a perception of his/her world via a landscape or the human body. By bringing together a mix of different media, styles and techniques, this exhibition promises to be a fascinating journey that explores the subject of hidden layers from many angles.

In Hidden Layers, the focus is shifted to you as an observer to engage with the finished piece and discover for yourself the layers  within the objects.

Fragments - Espacio Gallery

Fragments
21-26 March 2017

Private View: Thursday 23 March 6-9pm
The exhibition explores the concept of fragmentation by six artists across Brasil, Spain, and France. The works drive the audience through a multiplicity of practices and mediums that follow the same conceptual thread. Firstly experimenting with abstract paintings and snatched sculptures, the show progressively reveals several narrations.

Through the opposition between primitive and new technologies, humanmade power and natural forces, communication and social disconnection, unity and division; the artists attempt to reconstitute something that has been broken, in between layers of narratives.

Further, in the space the audience is confronted to multiple works. These pieces will lead to a collective experience, a more intimate approach to the concept of fragmentation including a sound piece, moving images and staged photography. Ultimately, the trip ends in a tiny dark room and its immersive projection.

SELFIES AT SEVENTY - GEOFF BRUNELL
EXHIBITION AND BOOK LAUNCH
14-19 March 2017

Private View: Thursday 16 March 6-9pm
Selfies at Seventy is Geoff Brunell’s first publishing project. A bespoke art book designed in collaboration with Barnaby Lambert.

The publication contains the Selfies at Seventy series, a set of 25 oil paintings, reproduced as digital C-prints, juxtaposed with the artist’s poetry, inspired by the pithy acuity of Ogden Nash and Wendy Cope. Limited to a first edition of 25 copies signed and numbered by the artist, the book will be available alongside a smaller, paperback edition.

The exhibition will consist of not only the original Selfies at Seventy paintings, hung adjacent to the poems featured in the book, but a further 19 oil paintings — they are autobiographical, and just as in any life, there are some serious bits and some playful.

LIP Central Group
20-26 February 2017

Private View: Thursday 23 February 6-9pm
Apart from a film, a photograph is the only recreation of the world that cannot be made from memory. Writers, composers and painters can all work inside their own heads, but photographers have to be in the same place as the things or the people they photograph.

The here-and-now is the material. The fifth show of the London Independent Photography’s Central Group brings together eighteen photographers, who explore in very different ways what it means to them to have a camera as an anchor in the HERE.

Seeing Red
31 January - 12 February 2017

Private View: Thursday 2 February 6-9pm
This group exhibition fills the two floors of the large beautiful gallery space with glowing colour. The 18 colourist artists in the exhibition celebrate the many ways to see the colour red. Red can boost your energy, it exudes confidence and is life-affirming, so this show is a great place to visit in the middle of a dreary London winter.

With a focus on painting, the artwork in this show also includes printmaking, collage, drawing and photography. The subjects of interest to the artists in this show include: extinction of species, histories of Asia, human impact on the landscape, the natural world, landscape painting, the colour of flowers, the urban environment, the current political situation, food, nighttime seascapes, portraits, and pure abstraction.

A Place in Between
24-29 January 2017

Private View: Thursday 26 January 6-9pm
Performance Art: Jones Tensini at 8pm

The interface between life experience and the artistic process can be a strange mysterious world of half glimpsed effects and ideas, but this is also the place in between life events where creative sparks are born.

The exhibition showcases works by national and international artists, in a variety of interpretations and mediums reflecting moments in the artists' lives when they found themselves in movement - either through space or state of mind.

Come and explore the interface between life and art; the inner place where creative sparks are born as the artists confront their inner selves during times of transition.
