Wolf at the door - Espacio Gallery

Wolf at the door
18-23 December 2014

Private View: Thursday 18 December 6-9pm

James Haggas   Chrissy Mclaughlan   Irina Tsynbal   Mark Walter

The four artists in this exhibition reflect the complexity of our world through the different approaches to their work. Ranging from the artist’s observations in the everyday, to the intimacy of imagined spaces developed in the studio. Whether conjured from the intricacies of human passions and patterns or from the beauty found in unexpected places, the group lace together history, freedom and inquiry with a desire to construct their new narratives.

The show includes painting, drawing, and sculpture, and is a celebration of the artists’ compulsion to continue making art despite the ever present wolf at the door.

James Haggas is engaged with the process of discovery and learning.  His art practice is stimulated by the constantly changing kaleidoscope of the everyday world around him.  His curiosity with the ephemeral presents the artist with infinite possibilities to create thought provoking and original work.

In her paintings, Christine Mclaughlan is concerned with the construction of imagined space and narrative through the manipulation of paint. Her textured and layered surfaces frequently hint at  interior landscapes or natural environments, where the viewer is invited to engage with visual fragments to locate the tangible: familiar and at times disconcerting.

Irina Tsynbal explores the concept of the Seven Deadly Sins. In her vibrant portraits of beautiful women, the artist skillfully manipulates the characters and expressions of her models with the use of tape and perspex, enhanced by a multi-faceted system of geometrical shapes and colour combinations.

Mark Walter is interested in creating new narratives from found objects, broken and discarded in the environment.  His enquiry is focused on the origins, materiality and presence of these objects, that have been devalued by society, and to re-purpose them into imaginative and compelling new work.

Chimera - Espacio Gallery

Chimera
11-16 December 2014

Private View: Thursday 11 December 6-9pm
The word Chimera immediately brings to mind a hybrid beast with the head of a lion, body of a dragon and a snake for a tail.

A more contemporary use of the word would be as a description of something hugely imaginative and dazzling.

This exhibition takes influence from both meanings to showcase the work of twelve very different artists.

Making Seen
4-9 December 2014

Private View: Thursday 4 December 6-9pm
Making Seen is a collection of artworks by thirteen artists that reveal their own unique journey into the making of art.

The exhibition is a fascinating insight into the creative mind of the artist.

Each artist is making seen the important creative processes that are essential to the development of their art. They allow the viewer a glimpse into sources of inspiration, and invite the onlooker to watch their ideas unfold, evolve and eventually develop into finished works.

It highlights intuitive decision making as a vital component in the creation of art and celebrates the extraordinary ability we all have of making thoughts and feelings visible.

Imprint - Espacio Gallery

Imprint
27 November - 2 December 2014

Private View: Thursday 27 November 6-9pm
The subconscious, the emotional states and the human nature. All of these culminated into an exhibition which reflects on the different imprints that four contemporary artists have had in their lives.

The two floors of Espacio Gallery will be displaying both abstract and figurative based work and will explore the opinions and experiences that influence how each artist portrays their subject matter.

Painting, sculpture and print will form a part of expressing how each artists’ past shapes and leaves impressions on them and their work- leaving imprints in their lives.

Illuminated - Espacio Gallery

Illuminated
30 October - 4 November 2014

Private View: Thursday 30 October 6-9pm
Juli Jolly and Amy Goodchild of the Jolly Good Creative Collective are delighted to present ‘Illuminated’. A group of 16 women open up to two female artists in an honest, intimate discussion about themselves and then pose comfortably nude. The exhibition has been funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign and features painted and photographic portraits.

The core aim of the project is to illuminate each woman's identity through two nude portraits, avoiding the use of the body as an anonymous form. Through collaboration on the concept and creative process, each subject is given creative agency and the opportunity to be naked on her own terms. The resulting works celebrate, visually and conceptually, the inner and outer beauty of women and challenge the viewer to recognise the individual within her body.

The paintings weave Victorian decorative patterns into the bodies of the women while leaving their faces highly focused. The juxtaposition of impressionistic and photorealistic techniques highlights the tension of having to house an individual personality in a body subject to generic expectations.

The photographs show the participants with an image projected onto their bodies. The projected image is chosen to be meaningful to the individual, drawn from the stories and feelings she shares with the artists. The result is expressive and intimate, creating a layer on top of the subject while revealing something from within.

Juli Jolly works mainly in painted portraiture. Her work is a blend of photorealism and dynamic patterns and draws on Pre-Raphaelite and Psychedelic traditions. Juli is fascinated by human psychology and the human form and face, and is interested in exploring the tactile, sensual element of art.  Amy Goodchild’s work is based in photography. Her work is experimental and exploratory, often using layering techniques. She aims to create visually and conceptually striking work which questions the universe and speaks to the viewer.

Points of View
23-28 October 2014

Private View: Thursday 23 October 6-9pm
The Espacio Gallery displays new work by five painters presenting their diverse views of contemporary landscape.

Points of View explores individual approaches to landscape by this group of painters. Their visual interpretations of paintings and prints, show five very different styles of work revealing a wide variety of content. These artists express their creative motives in paintings that span abstraction, symbolism, and reflections of personal experiences.

City scenes, trees and fields, building sites, and vast vistas, together with hidden ‘landscape’ of the inner mind, show how each artist has reacted to the landscape, through different media, as an expression of their ‘Points of View’.

'Each artist demonstrates a strong personal vision with a coherant visual language. There is a collective spirit within this group which joyously celebrates the sensuality of media, the nuance of gesture, and the infinite possibilities this offers.' Mick Kirkbride NEAC

Preview: Thursday 31 July 6-9pm
Espacio Gallery is delighted to present ‘Urban Angles’; where there are cities, there are artists... and no city is complete without its galleries, music venues and literary culture.

‘Urban Angles’ draws  on the differing creative backgrounds of nineteen artists who use an eclectic mix of media, print, paints, illustration, graphics, photography and sculpture.

The artistic heritage of a city is created and shaped by the artists who live and work there; this exhibition reveals the city as a hub which enables the cross-pollination of multiple ideas and cultures.

In the same way that the city provides each individual with the anonymity to ‘’be themselves’’, ‘Urban Angles’ offers  each artist within the collective, the opportunity to present and express their unique and individual  perspective of the urban environment.

We invite you to join Espacio on this fascinating journey of discovery revealing the artists’ unique experiences of the city as site, subject and inspiration for their work.

Duality is the condition of being two, of having two parts usually with opposite meanings, two splitting parts stemming from one unit like the existence of good and evil in human nature.

Duality is present in the enigmatic nature of mankind - up and down, peace and war, love and hate, etc. The idea of opposites (Yin-Yang, the union and harmony of opposites) has existed in both Eastern and Western philosophy since ancient times.

Duality has been farther examined, it has technical meanings in geometry as well as physics, and  it can be challenging. However, for this show we aim to get into a playful, free-spirited investigation using art and a great dose of audacity!

City Lit Fine Art Course Exhibition
17-22 July 2014

Preview: Thursday 17 July 6-9pm
Students from the City Lit Fine Art Course present their end of course show at Espacio Gallery.

The dynamic and often experimental work is a result of two years study by students from contrasting and diverse backgrounds and artistic interests. There is no unifying or house style to this show, it is based upon exploration and discovery and no student is prevented from working in their chosen genre. Interests range from small sculpture inspired by Brutalist Architecture to personal dreamscapes, visions and myths of masculinity and the very process of creating artwork on an intuitive basis.

Students have chosen work because it represents an exciting stage in their development and this informs the lively spirit of the show.

City Lit is an inclusive Adult College in Central London, where students are encouraged to develop their aspirations and celebrate their difference.

Flesh. Just the sound of the word is evocative and provocative. For some it conjures thoughts of a juicy steak, served rare, still slightly bloody. For others it brings images of Soho bookshops and red-light windows in Amsterdam. And for the spiritually-minded, there's the mystery of communion and of God made flesh in Jesus.

However you approach it, flesh is the bedrock of our very existence as human beings. Without flesh we could not experience the temptations and terrors of the world around us.

This stimulating exhibition celebrates the physicality and sensuality of the human body. The artists were invited to submit work which confronts the many meanings of flesh, and challenges socially-imposed taboos and notions of sin and virtue as well as exploring our preconceived notions of what it really means to be made of meat.

Much of our time is spent in going from one place to another, in creating our own spaces or having them created for us, and in encountering an array of people – family, colleagues, friends, enemies, lovers and strangers – as we pass between them.

People and Places is an exhibition of 15 artists each responding in their own way to these encounters and the spaces in which they are situated. Drawing on and responding to these experiences, each artist reflects on these, through their own perspectives and creative approaches, to produce a diverse range of interpretive and original works on the exhibition’s theme.

PRIVATE DECADES
Elizabeth Strath
19 June - 1 July 2014

Preview: Thursday 19 June 6-9pm
This major solo show marks a London home coming for Elizabeth Strath, representing the artists journey “from London's 'Chartered Streets' to North East Scotland's luminous skies, chasing light and colour ‘those will o' the wisps that dance ahead showing the path’”.

Private Decades chronicles an evolving East End, its industrial sites, artists’ studios and monuments are scrutinized on the canvas in vivid colour.

Her paintings are informed by Goethe’s colour theory, and inspiration is drawn from the visionary poet William Blake.

‘I wandered through each chartered street, Near where the chartered Thames does
flow, A mark in every face I meet, Marks of weakness, marks of woe.’

Colourswatch
5-17 June 2014

Preview: Thursday 5 June 6-9pm
This exhibition is by South London Women Artists and shows work by 41 artists.

'Colourswatch' is a celebration of arguably the most impactful of the formal elements, colour, and is a visual feast.

The idea behind ‘Colourswatch’, developed from an exhibition Pat Keay curated in Nairobi in 2005. It was called ‘True Colours’ and involved a group of street boys picking a colour swatch from a basket. The swatches were allocated in turn to the next artist on an alphabetical list.  Artists who used colour as a principle means of expression in their work were invited to participate. No artist had control over which colour was given to them to work with.

As with that exhibition, the process for ‘Colourswatch’ was to allocate, by random selection, an A5 swatch of solid colour to each participating artist to promote a creative reaction. They were invited to respond intellectually, politically, adversely or emotionally to the colour with all its implicit symbolism and association.

Some artists felt challenged by their colour as it was outside their usual studio practice and ‘comfort zone’. Others welcomed the project, for the same reasons.  Come and view the results which are exciting, revealing, subtle and clever in their diversity and integrity.

Space Unfolding presents paintings by six British and international emerging artists from a wide range of backgrounds.  A superficially disparate body of work is presented to allow for coherent interaction and response to the theme of space and a dialogue of unexpected connection.  During the opening weekend of the exhibition the artists will be individually speaking about their work, their influences and methodologies.

24-29 April 2014

Artists Who are a collective of five diverse London based artists that formed in January 2013 to exhibit their work together as a means to create alternative channels to artistic expression. Their unique fusion of contrasting influences, styles and media result in a distinctive and compelling showcase of modern art.

The collective launched a rolling tour of exhibitions across the capital and beyond in November 2013. They now bring ‘Artists Who…Seconds’ to Espacio Gallery, with three dynamic guest artists: Andy Gashe, Suzette Clough and Jordane Somville.

Material Matters
10-15 April 2014

Preview: Thursday 10 April 6-9pm
Materials matter to these artists. Cardboard, plastic, wood, wax, newsprint, tissue paper, stone and many other materials come together in an exploration of human interaction with the material world. We live in a world where our senses are dulled by the glossy surfaces of infinitely reproducible digital imagery, but Material Matters examines the proposition that exciting, unpredictable, and challenging art emerges out of a direct physical engagement with materials.

The work in the show includes both wall and floor- based art and embraces a wide range of practices from formal abstraction to collage and landscape painting. Material Matters shows us that form and meaning are complex and multi-layered. In addition, by subverting our normal assumptions about familiar materials, it also suggests the world is a much stranger and more interesting place than we think it is.

Clive Giller & Bill Davis
20-25 March 2014

Preview: Thursday 20 March 7-9pm
Clive Giller, retired architect, and Bill Davis, sailor and traveller, have been exchanging views on cities, mountains, far-flung places and life generally for many years.

This exhibition reflects the different approaches they take to making images. Bill’s carefully considered photographs aim to convey the drama of landscapes and seascapes directly. Clive uses instantaneous shots that can then be transformed into subtly altered paintings both representational and abstract. Themes range from the vastness of the Atlantic to intimate studies of the Regent’s Canal.

Gazing...to be gazed at?...

This exhibition is about contemplation, looking at  things in the world. Artists will freely explore their personal views and express in their works any thoughts or spontaneous reactions brought about their observation of objects, people, nature or any other living or static forms. They may also 'play around' taking into consideration psychoanalitycal and philosophical theories about the concept of gaze.

Categories of works include: painting, mixed media, drawing, photography, digital art, sculpture, video/film, installation and performance.

Colourworks
6-11 February 2014

Private View: Thursday 6 February 6-9pm
"If one has a colour to start from, then one builds the whole painting around it. Colour has just as strong a logic as a form” (Pierre Bonnard).

The work of the 14 artists in this exhibition relies on colour as a fundamental component. It is not just a pleasing aspect of the artist’s work but is their primary means of expression. Whether figurative or semi-abstract, people, objects and landscapes, these works exude energy and strength. The harmonies may be subtle, or the contrasts strong, but the Colourworks exhibition will undoubtedly awaken your senses and touch your soul.

The question we started with in creating this show was: how would contemporary artists respond to this subject?  In our secular culture, where there is no otherworldly accountability for our behaviour, where we expect our needs and even our wants to be met here and now, where the consumerist imperative leaves little room for postponement of desires, would the theme find any resonance at all?
