I make connections: between ideas and subjects, style and media. I think it comes from my eclectic background - the theatre, science, publishing, design. But whatever I have done it has always been with an eye for the unusual: a different angle, a new perspective. Whether in photography or painting my eye is drawn to colour, contrast, depth and shape. Every piece of work demands its own concept, medium, evolution and finale. I work with a range of media – photography and mixed media which often includes beeswax, pigment, pastels and metal leaf. What I select depends on the subject, art should be enhanced, not imprisoned, by the technique used. Usually I will combine these to give each piece its unique finish. This is a fascinating world and I want to capture that sense of awe and wonder through the viewfinder or on wood and paper. Most of the time we can spend our busy lives missing the beauty that surrounds us whether that be in a city or in a wave pattern. Seeing such beauty helps us to appreciate, value and protect the myriad of environments that surround us. Inspiration is everywhere: a rusty lock, a piece of literature, a ripple in the ocean. All too often we glance over these things without truly seeing them. My aim, whatever the subject, is to find an angle that I hope will challenge and please the viewer in equal measure.
